A US man mistakenly shot dead his 15-year-old son while investigating what appeared to be an attempted burglary next door, police say.

Jeffrey Giuliano, from New Fairfield in Connecticut, opened fire on a masked teenager outside his sister's house.

Police later told him he had killed his adopted son Tyler. No charges have yet been filed in the case.

"All in all it's a tragedy," said state police spokesman Lt J Paul Vance, quoted by the AP news agency.

According to police, the father was called by his sister, who lives next door, at around 01:00 on Friday (05:00 GMT) when she heard someone outside the house and believed they were attempting to break in.

Mr Giuliano confronted a person wearing a black balaclava and black clothing, and fired his gun when the person lunged at him with "a shiny weapon".

He did not know it was his son until they removed the head covering.

The teenager was discovered by police lying in the driveway with gunshot injuries, his father sitting nearby. Tyler was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed, and an autopsy is planned.

Mr Giuliano is a science teacher in the town's school district.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

again :fp: or is this old news?
  • I feel bad for the dad but his kid was armed and getting ready to rob his neighbor who knows what would've happened had he entered the house, that could've been much worse. One less punk in the world is not a tragedy.

I think it remains to be seen whether the kid was actually armed or the dad just thought he was armed. And, by all accounts I've read elsewhere, he was a good kid - not a punk. (But how quick we are to judge...)

This is one reason I got rid of my gun a long time ago. If someone actually did break into my house, I'd be terrified and would likely shoot him. But I don't want to kill anyone. Everyone is someone's son (or daughter).

Good kids don't wear ski masks and break into houses.

He didn't actually break into the house. They don't know whether he was going to break in or was just playing a prank on his aunt.

Yeah the article goes out of its way not to mention anything about whether the kid was actually trying to rob the neighbor. That or the story is so fresh that they just don't have the detail. Who knows what "lunged at me with a shiny object" will turn into as the story develops. The Trayvon story varied wildly over the course of time.

If it was a prank, wouldn't the kid have wet his pants and immediately dropped the "shiny object" when he saw his step dad with a gun? Complete conjecture here on my part, but it will be interesting to see how this story plays out.

Need to find out WHY the kid was out there. Like, WHY would he be breaking into his Aunt's house? If he want to steal something... he could probably just go over there when he knew she was out at the super market ot doctor's office or something.
    But, yes... it is tragic.

Some of you may be missing that it was his aunts house. Seems like a prank to me. I hope he was armed for the dads sake.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.
  • Tragic is right. This seems to have a few more details. Apparently there was a (unrelated) violent burglary in the same community earlier in the week. So, perhaps folks were on edge.

I'm sure there will be more to the story. Regardless, tragic is still the right word.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

& thats why guns are bad, m'kay. It's not guns themselves, it's the freaking idiots who own them. So So so so glad we have tighter gun controls inthe UK. Probably the only thing I like about england.

A young life was lost in a pretty stupid and reckless moment on the boy's part. Of course more details will come out - always do - but based on the above article, the shooter was trying to protect his sister/sister's property, a masked someone comes at him with what turns out to be a knife (if it were me and I saw someone in "thief gear" bearing a shiny something, I'd think it was a weapon too; then I'd high-tail it). And, the kid moved toward him with it - he could've stabbed his stepfather and there would be no less of a tragedy here.

Wish I knew what that kid was thinking at the time. And I can't imagine the grief, guilt, regret, you name it, that the man will hold.

    Really sad all around.

I wonder if these two officers would still be alive if they were allowed to carry guns.

I'm not a gun owner but that's pretty insulting to those who are - the responsible ones, at least.

I know, entitled to one's opinion, yadda yadda, but still.
