MISSOULA, MONTANA VACATION

Our trip to Missoula is a little vacation for my wife and I - topped off with the show. We are flying in on Thursday & departing on Monday. I was just going to start planning what we are going to do Thur. Night, Friday, & Saturday. ANY suggestions or must see/do activities?

    I'm trying to convince my wife to do the same thing! :) Good luck finding things to do... if you see another couple at all the same sightseeing stops, its probably us ;)

    We're doing the same thing. We're planning on seeing Glacier Nat'l Park, some hiking, and I'm researching for other things to do in the area, like helicopter rides over the mountains. Just do some research on the area, you'll find some interesting stuff to do!

    themessenger and I are flying into Spokane on Friday afternoon and we're planning on driving to Glacier National Park and spending half of Saturday there before heading to Missoula in the afternoon.

    Definitely go to Glacier. Go on "Going to the sun highway" and cross the border into Canada's Waterton National Park if you have passports. It's a bit of a drive but worth it. I am in Waterton right now. I will be spending time here again en route to the show at the end of the month. Whitefish, MT is also a cool town. There is a thread in the forum regarding things to do. I think it is called "things to do in Montana". I'm on my phone and can't find the link. See you there!

    We are driving down from Calgary and this is the route I want to take. I would like to enjoy the 8 hr drive as much as possible. We went to Waterton a couple years ago, but have not been to Glacier for 13 years. A stop in Whitefish for lunch and then onto Missoula is the plan. Of course all of this depends on the weather. If we get early snow it is possible the Going to the Sun Highway will be closed. Fingers are crossed for a beautiful Indian Summer that lasts until Halloween!

    I was checking out the Going to the Sun road fall schedule, it will be closed from Logan Pass eastward by late September. So only half of it will be driveable. Waterton looks gorgeous, but quite the roundabout drive from Whitefish.

    Besides seeing PJ, meeting any and all of you my PJ forum friends is top on my list. Meeting any of you and seeing the band will both be first for me. :D (Big thanks to my wife for indulging me in this trip and going along for the ride!)

    From there we'll head to Yellowstone to wrestle bears, chase moose, sample the sulfur pots and run through Old Faithful like it's a sprinkler in summer. Hope to survive it all!

    That would be great! We'll probably be staying in or around Whitefish Friday night. We'll get up early on Saturday to do the tour and probably spend half the day or more at Glacier before heading down to Missoula.

    Will be driving from Minnesota, and the plan is to get to Waterton Thursday and explore Waterton and the east side of Glacier Friday. Then heading to Kalispell / Whitefish to check out the west side. Then on to Missoula on Sunday. Hope to do some hiking on Friday in Glacier, so maybe I will see some of you on the trail! From what I can gather the Going to the Sun Road has construction going on in the fall, and so you can drive it partly from the west and from the east you can access Logan pass, but you can drive the whole thing through. Of course, it could all be closed down if it snows! There is a hike at Logan pass that I want to check out called Hidden Lake - apparently lots of mountain goats! Also I would love to do the Iceberg lake trail, but I hear it is closed a lot because of bears and since it will be prime bear time, I don't have my hopes up!

    Here I am the most experienced Glacier/Yellowstone guide in the PJ message pit and not one person has taken me up on my offer for a trip into the backcountry of either park. Don’t let the fact that no paying customer has ever returned from one of my expeditions dissuade you. Those folks just loved it so much they decided to pull an “Into the Wild” and live out the remainder of their existence with the bears.

    You should cannonball right into Old Faithful. The rangers frown on it, but really, how often do you get to Jellystone?

    I agree with everyone that GNP is a must. That time of year you are likely to see bears in Mini Glacier. We will be in Msla Thurs-Monday. Use to live there so here are some suggestions for some day trips from Missoula.

    1. Symes Hot Springs in Hot Springs is wonderful. It is 75 miles from Missoula. http://symeshotsprings.com/
    I would highly recommend and if you can spend the night at the hotel it is totally worth it. Nice drive too.

    2. Bison Range is a short drive from Missoula. Might see some bear here too and of course lots of Bison. This is actually on the way to the hot springs mentioned above.

    3. If the weather is nice you could raft Alberton Gorge. You would need to rent wetsuits but you could probably hook up with a company that supplies everything. Class 3 mellow float.

    4. Jerry Johnson Hot Springs in Idaho: About an hour or slightly longer drive and another 45 minute hike in to get to some natural hot springs.

    5. Rattlesnake Recreational Area is in Missoula and has great mountain biking and hiking. So does Blue Mountain.

    6. Lolo hot springs is about a 30 minute drive. IMO not as nice as Symes but still good.

    7. Lochsa lodge in Idaho is a fun place to spend a night or two. Lots of hiking around there, reasonable rates, cabin in the middle of nowhere and close to Jerry Johnson hotsprings mentioned above.

    Well, I could probably go on and on. You can probably google anything I mentioned. Unlimited outdoor recreation opportunities abound. Feel free to email me with any questions.
