I agree it is not about free speech but one persons belief and opinion that he gave and will suffer the consequences for.

unless people keep defending his right to say whatever he pleases.. baseless facts.

why can't you just say what he said was wrong? if you say something bad about the tea baggers or the republicans donald trump isn't going to come to your door and fire you.

I like Mr trump would love to meet him :D

Though I do not agree with this man's words as I know where babies come from ;)
I understand he was speaking his opinion belief. I don't think that is wrong.
I think many here took his word legitimate rape wrong and found it insulting
though it was not intended to be....in my opinion.

freedom of speech let's you say basically whatever you want and not got to jail for it. it doesn't mean there won't be repercussions for things you say.

Aren't the majority of rapes in the Western world by someone known to the victim? Rape is rape... 'legitimate'

About consent (or lack thereof), power, authority.
Yep - estimates are about 85% of the time the perpetrator is someone known to the victim. I think that can make healing even more complicated.

Imagine if your neighbor, classmate, coworker, etc. robbed your house. Would that render it not a "legitimate robbery"? Would that make it any less devastating? I think that would make it even more confusing and violating.

free speech is a myth ... we do not have it ...

making this an issue of free speech is absurd ... this is about a person running for elected office who is ignorant on a key issue that he is campaigning on ... dude didn't get caught being a dumbass on some topic he isn't supposed to know ... he got caught citing false information on a key issue of his ... which is critical in this period of misinformation ...
well said. If you're going to talk about issues as fact and work to pass legislation on them, make sure you know what the hell you're talking about.

Well... at least your body would 'shut down' and there wouldn't be risk of pregnancy - one less thing to worry about then.... Anyone trying to find excuses for this guy is just as ignorant. He should go hide in a little corner and hope the world (well.. US) forgets about him. And whilst he's in his little corner, he should brush up on his biology.

So you think he meant acquaintance rape is not legitimate rape?

gee I don't think that is at all what he meant.

This part... Contributor Mark Halperin said that Akin's comment was a birthday gift for Obama's spokesman Ben LaBolt and one that "will have reverberations beyond that single race."

Is why we are idiots. We will let people manipulate us and try to push off 1 persons words onto others. We will buy into that bullshit.

It should effect only 1 race...the one he is in. Maybe he can get a job working at a hospital when he loses?

Paul Ryan, Rominee etc 'beliefs' aren't too much removed from Akin's remember.. They are all as extreme as it gets with rape and abortion opinions.

He is giving his opinion not passing anything off...

I understand where his statement comes from though I do not agree with it.

I believe he has a right to speak and will take the consequences for that.
    this is what he said

U.S. Rep. Akin, who is challenging incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., made the comment during an interview on KTVI, the St. Louis Fox affiliate. In one part of the interview, Charles Jaco asked about Akin's stance against abortion rights even in cases of rape.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy) is really rare" in rape cases, Akin said, according to a video of the interview posted Sunday on YouTube. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

He added: "But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

the large part is a declarative statement. that statement says nothing of his beliefs. he is trying to pass it off as fact.

Why does every fucking thread turn into these unreal ramblings about rights and what not?

    FUCK.

Who gives a fuck if he was expressing his opinion. He is a moron. Morons shouldn't express their opinions.

Based on his argument about pregnancy being unlikely because of the female body "shutting things down" I think he meant if physical force isn't used it's not a legitimate rape.

what do you think he meant?

the extreme right want a enforce a bill that would define rape as only that if it was forcible violent type..

Did you read the link about where this theory originates and what exactly it is?

The type of rape you are speaking of would most likely not fit, as there would be trauma.

excuses is that what you call understanding and interpreting another's opinion :fp:
