I used to hear this stupid notion 20-25 years ago (pregnancy as a result of rape is rare, the violence of the act prevents conception from occurring) but it mostly came from fundamentalist religious leaders. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that something so outrageous is still kicking around. But the fact that it's coming from someone who holds public office is mind-boggling. And scary.

  • Something else that confuses me...

He said that if a woman's body doesn't do her magic vagina trick and abort the fetus, then there should be punishment and it should be "on the rapist."

    Does that mean...

    A) if she DOES do her magic vagina trick and abort the fetus that the rapist doesn't get punished (since that means it wasn't a legitimate rape)

    Or

    B) that the rapist must pay for the abortion himself?

I really hope it's B), because the last time I checked, rape is illegal. Although... maybe he's not aware that rape is illegal and he's going off of the assumption that it isn't?

Or maybe he means the rapist should pay child support?

Or maybe he means the rapist should be sentenced for both the rape and the act of bringing a child into the world against the rape victim's will?

HOW CAN THIS GUY BE SO STUPID?
drivingrl: "Will I ever get to meet Gwen Stefani?"
kevinbeetle: "Yes. When her career washes up and her and Gavin move to Galveston, you will meet her at Hot Topic shopping for a Japanese cheerleader outfit.

    Next!"

I think he believes an old school notion that the female body
under the great stress of rape will rarely conceive, he's not alone.

I am assuming he may have been thinking of the different types of rape
when he said legitimate, as in statuary rape which is by law rape but can be consensual.
Legitimate as far as the physical reactions he believes takes place in the body.

Not agreeing nor condoning his statement, just understanding what he meant,
nor am I into attacking him as some here are....
looks like the blue brigade showed up ;)

I am pro choice not pro abortion.

local news is reporting today that gop higher ups are asking him to withdraw from the race.

    :corn:

edit to add, anyone who went through sex ed in 5th grade should know that there is no auto shut off function in the female body. :fp:

It looks like it's not just liberals that are outraged by this.

Like I said, he can espouse his view on abortion without dragging rape survivors down along the way.

How do men with thinking like this even get elected into office? And how can anyone think he knows how a woman's body works? It's just completely embarrassing that there are people like this representing the people...

No, I assure you that if he was a liberal I would think he was just as stupid.

What blame game? He said it! Nobody forced him to say it. He didn't get trapped into saying it. These are his beliefs and what's sad is he represents thousands of people with these beliefs.

No I meant the blame game that continually goes on between
the red side and blue side in politics...
not pertaining to this incident... just in general across the news.
We are hot and heavy in it now.

Yes he does represent thousands with similar beliefs, interestingly.

this isn't about being blue, red or green.. this is about respecting women, not reporting things as fact when they aren't and pretty much making sure what you saw in public discourse is accurate. In this case he wasn't.. this is about right and wrong not left and right.. this guy was wrong to say what he said or even think this. It's a blight on his character and disrespectful to women and rape victims both men and women. Everyone understand what he meant.. it was an uneducated comment. He needs to shut his mouth unless he knows what he is talking about in the future. We can't let extremists (on both sides) state they think obama was responsible for shooting, that government should be run by only religious thinking and unfounded and stupid comments about something as serious as rape.
