Has anyone listened to Binaural with the original track listing, not the one that came out with the cd? I tried it today and wow - Binaural is my favorite album and the original track listing I find more refreshing and paced better. Here's a list -

Original track listing

"Breakerfall"
"Insignificance"
"Evacuation"
"Letter to the Dead" - aka - "Sad"
"Rival"
"Grievance"
"Gods Dice"
"Light Years"
"Of the Girl"
"Thin Air"
"Nothing as It Seems"
"Fatal"
"Sleight of Hand"
"Soon Forget"
"In the Moonlight"
"Parting Ways"
"Education"

Final track listing

1. "Breakerfall"
2. "Gods' Dice"
3. "Evacuation"
4. "Light Years"
5. "Nothing as It Seems"
6. "Thin Air"
7. "Insignificance"
8. "Of the Girl"
9. "Grievance"
10. "Rival"
11. "Sleight of Hand"
12. "Soon Forget"
13. "Parting Ways"

Try it the original way and let me know what you think!

Edit -

If you like this try playing Riot Act - in this order with the b sides mixed in. Here's the track list.

I like the original... It would have been pretty long though

This looks interesting. Long (as noted above), but rich.
  • Is that original track listing (which is awesome btw) official or just a mildly educated guess? I know it's on wiki but is it just some guy from Sony who sent it out or was it actually what the band where considering?
I can't imagine Education finishing the album especially considering their track record of finishing each album with a slow burner.

As an aside, Sad is one of their greatest non album tracks.
  • Oh and I should add - Great idea to make a playlist of the 'original' tracklist and yeah it's an astounding album!!

I have to agree with Sad. That would have been a great addition to the album
  • A great irony in my concert going is that I've had the joy of seeing 'Sad', 'Education' & 'Hitchhiker' all non album Binaural era tracks live, yet I've never seen one of my all time favourites from this album (and their entire catalogue) 'Of the Girl'!
funny how things like that go.
  • I was just thinking the other day that the tracks on Binaural were arranged haphazardly and could have flowed better. I never knew there was a different arrangement till this thread.

I like this flow better. Maybe switch the last two so parting ways is last.

I like the beginning - brakeherfall into insignificance .. Also like how the 1st 7 songs rock hard then it mellows out and the combo of the girl into thin air into NAIS into fatal into sleight of hand is a nice combo also.

Has anyone actually made this playlist? I like it!

Am I the only one that thinks the typing at the end was essentially useless?

I have it all set up on spotify if by some chance you couldn't make the playlist

I could be drunk... But this is sounding wayyyyy better... and Binaural is my favorite PJ album

    I agree it's a much better flow!

Yes the typing at the end sucks - usually a reason I skip that version when setting up playlists but still a great song.

Now if someone could make a "live version" with that track listing - would be a nice listen.

I don't know dudes... I'm liking "Education" at the end... Get rid of the stupid typing at the end of "Parting Ways" and we are set!

Overall, as a fan, I can officially say I like this much more than the original!

However, it is STILL very long. I don't think it would fly with Sony...

Could "Education" have possibly been intended as a hidden track? It makes sense to the flow considering that possibility.. Regardless.. This is a fresh take on the record and probably would have had a more universal appeal with this running order. Really digging this..

I've heard a few people say its too long? Why is that important? Imagine buying the album and having all the extra songs that day.. The 2000 tour would have had more songs in rotation also. The fact it's long I like, you never hear someone say a show was too long. I remember backspacer getting a lot of complaints for being too short.

I agree the album would have more universal appeal in this order.

If you like this try playing riot act - in this order with the b sides mixed in. Here's the track list.

It's 18 songs that way and again makes a much better album with the flow and extra songs. Try it out!

I leave Binaural just as it is, I could take out a bunch of songs and replace them with Sad, Fatal and In the moonlight, but nothing would change much, in fact, they could have appear as bsides of the singles, they should have released another single besides NAIS and Light years...
... I am not in the business of being liked anymore ...

I didn't care for the original Riot Act

Am I the only one that thinks the typing at the end was essentially useless?

it is meant to signify the severe writers block ed had during the creation of the album.

I didn't care for the original Riot Act

Probably why it was changed... But it's a different, refreshing take on the albums!

I really dig Binaural this way:

    Of the girl
    Hitchhiker
    In the Moonlight
    Sad
    Education
    Light Years
    Nothing As It Seems
    Thin Air
    Insignificance
    Fatal
    Grievance
    Rival
    Sleight of Hand
    Soon Forget
    Parting Ways

Fifteen tracks - same as Riot Act, which is harder to mix any differently then it was. Undone, Otherside and Down are 3 of the best songs from the RA sessions, but they don't fit as well as the Binaural 'lost dogs' do.

I just made a playlist in my iTunes account. I've also replaced 'Glorified g' with 'Hold On' on VS and I like it better; everything else on the album is the same.

Gods Dice was not on the original track listing.
    Summerfest 7/8/95
    Missoula 6/20/98
    Alpine Valley 6/26/98 & 6/27/98
    Alpine Valley 10/8/00
    Champaign 4/23/03
    Alpine Valley 6/21/03
    Missoula 8/29/05
    Chicago 5/16 & 17/06
    Grand Rapids 5/19/06
    Summerfest 6/29/06 & 6/30/06
    Tampa 6/12/08
    Chicago 8/23/09
    Indy 5/7/10
    Alpine Valley x2 2011
    Wrigley 2013
    Milwaukee 14
    Telluride 16
  • Binaural is my 2nd least favorite. Riot Act is my least.

I do love Nothing as it Seems, Of the Girl, and Rival.

However, if Breakerfall, God's Dice, and Evacuation were eliminated and Sad, Fatal, In the Moonlight, and Education added, it would move up on the list.

Breakerfall and Evacuation are my bottom two of the entire catalog of PJ songs. Right next to Help Help and Green Disease. These are just bad songs!!!!

Riot Act would be a much better album if they cut some of the fat and added Undone and Otherside.
You'll see dragons after three or four.... I said YEAH!!!!!
