Things to do in Berlin?

Hi, I'm looking for advice on stuff to do in Berlin.
We'll have 1 whole day and 2 half days free for sightseeing (maybe longer if I decide not to queue after getting 10C tickets).
Also, we're staying at the Upstalsboom Hotel Friedrichshain which I understand is not too far from the venue, but was wondering how far this is from the 'centre' / shops (cos I like to shop as well as sightsee  )
Any ideas / info would be greatly appreciated
(PS. Hubby is really interested in history of WWI and II)
Thanks

What do you want to do in Berlin? A cheap way for a sight-seeing tour is by bus "Linie 100".

(company that offers tours through bunkers of the WW2 and underground Berlin)
hope that helps.
main shopping areas are: Tauentzienstrasse/Kurfürstendamm in former West-Berlin (closest train strations: subway station "Wittenbergplatz" or "Zoologischer Garten") and the area around Hackescher Markt in the former east (train station "Hackerscher Markt" or subway "Weinmeister Strasse").
there are shopping malls at "Potsdamer Platz" (Potsdamer Platz Arkaden) and "Alexanderplatz" (Alexia)
its also quite nice to walk around in the suburb of Prenzlauer Berg (from Subway station "Senefelder Platz" around Kollwitzplatz to subway station "Eberswalsder Strasse") there are lots of smaller shops (clothes, gifts etc.)
or around Bergmannstrasse in the suburb Kreuzberg (subway station "Mehringdamm") etc. etc. depends on your time.
One and a half day is a veeery short time for Berlin, the town is big & there are loads of things to see. Somebody has already suggested a tour with the communal bus 100 from Alexanderplatz, it's really a cheap and great idea. There are double-decker busses, be first in the queue and get the front seats upstairs with the big windows! There is no time for museums, Berlin has fantastic ones but you'd need more days for them. I think I would stop at the Branderburger Tor, you are not too far away from the Reichstag (the Parliament Building "redesigned" by Norman Foster), you are exactly between East and West Berlin. You're also within walking distance of the Siegessäule (the famous Golden Angel), the Holocaust Monument, Potsdamer Platz (you can get a guided tour about the Hitler's bunker not far from there), the Topography of Terror (somebody has already mentioned that). Near the Topography should still stand a long bit of the wall, grey, not painted.
I would take some time to walk around Prenzlauerberg (I used to live there & I love it!) there are loads of (design) shops, restaurants from every part of the world, great cafés, Biergarten (Prater, just to mention one). Enjoy Berlin, it's a cool town!!

Lucky you! I'll get visitors from Italy on the 3rd already for the show in Stockholm on the 7th and I'm really glad about that but I'd love to be in my ex home town for the concert. The view from the Fernsehturm is breath-taking but you'll have to queue a long time if the sky is clear... ;-) Have a GREAT time!
