Poster Storage

Got way too many tubes!

Have approx 50 posters...what is a good way to store them flat?

How do I transform a rolled poster into a flat poster?

Don't want to spend a fortune, but don't want them to get ruined.

Bags Unlimited has large cardboard poster storage boxes that hold 25 posters each.

Thoughts?

Yeah man, I'm in the same boat. I have a friend who has the flat storage case for posters. The only problem is that he paid over $100 for it on e-bay.

Have you seen these portfolio's Joe, or are they too pricey? Holds up to 80 (40 sleeves).

    http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discount- ... -cases.htm

Most folks here have the 24x36 which looks like it's currently out of stock :( Those fit the PJ20 Klausen, Ken Taylor Mexico, Billboard poster and Toronto Moose but just barely.

They have discounts from time to time, I'll send them your way if I see any :)

    thanks!

If I use a cardboard flat storage box, do I need to have some sort of separation layer between each poster?

I'd imagine you would need some sort of archival-quality sheet to separate your prints. Kraft paper can probably work in the short-term, but I'm not sure about long term.

I got the portfolio because I literally have no room to lay anything that big flat on my floor :( My portfolio lives behind my miniature couch :lol:

    Listen to Suzie

The picturesque is a nice case. Plus you can flip thru them from time to time.

And even show your friends, if they are like mine they won't give a shit :)

I bought four 24x32 frames back in '09 because I was going to try to get creative with my posters from that tour, centering them in the frame and then surrounding them with a border and pictures I took at each show. Never got around to it so now I just use those frames to flatten out posters in between frame purchases. ;)

Speaking of the odd size posters like the Billboard and the Jack White poster I just picked up at the Mayan (which is also 12"x36"), are there any places that actually sell a nice but inexpensive 12"x36" frame? I generally just get a regular black Trendsetters poster frame from Michaels when they have coupons/sales for my standard size posters, but the only thing they have close is 11.75"x36". I'm most likely going to hold off and do a custom job with my Billboard, but I'm looking for something similar to the Trendsetters for the odd size posters.

I use hobby lobby when michaels falls through, plus the have half off sales (no coupon) most of the time........and they have a 1' x 3' frame that I got a while back for my PJ20 billboard print, wood frame and glass, $18.00 if I remember right?

    fuzzy pic....

I have the picturesque presentation case...and I already need more pages. i love it.

currently, the ones NOT in sleeves are in the case but with the softer kraft paper between each poster,

don't leave the posters in the tubes for too long, otherwise the ink and paper will refuse to lay flat.

and make sure any off the shelf frames you buy are made with acid and lignin free materials, most inexpensive cardboard is made with acids that will affect the poster (discolor, stick to, etc) or if you don't care about the poster don't worry about it.

    good luck Joe!

The Picturesque Presentation Cases over @ Jerry's are awesome. But if you're looking to buy one now, the cases are out of stock till June 25th. I checked Amazon.com. They sell the refill sheets but no 24x36 cases .. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss/ ... ation+Case.

If you don't have the money to get them all framed definitely use a portfolio and put storage paper (acid-less) between them. Keeping them in tubes and/or cardboard boxes are not good for them after a while. The cardboard will ruin the posters

It's a bummer that they don't ship to Canada. (I just tried to order from that amazon link)

This will be the hardest thing you do. I suggest you go here. http://www.expressobeans.com/ search the forums and look for ideas. It took me months to get my first batch of posters flat. I now remove them from the tubes as soon as I get them.

The only problem I see with Jerry's Picturesque line is the sleeves are cut short. So many of my 18 x 24 and 24 x 36 prints barely fit in the sleeves. I had to resort to putting most prints in 24 x 36 sleeves.

I use mylar sheets between my posters when they are flat and in storage.
Get em flat as soon as you can people. If you don't.....they will never "lay down" for you.
Even if you have to go to Michaels and get two big pieces of cardboard....lay down a piece of craft paper or mylar, lay down a poster, craft paper or mylar, next poster.....etc etc etc. Tape all the sides of the cardboard to make a poster/mylar sandwich and slide the whole contraption under your bed. I have that big ass Vancouver stored like that right now as it is too damn big to fit in my portfolio. I put magazines all over the top of the whole thing for weight.........seems to work and it is relatively cheap.

Might be another site too that has the Picturesque Presentation Cases that would ship to Canada. If not just wait till June 25th. But before making the purchase keep an eye out for coupon codes. I've found a few outside Jerry's via Google search. Saved an addition $50 bucks on top of the sale price from Jerry's once! :)

To flatten posters, I put the print between 2 pieces of acid-free foam core and store it beneath my portfolio. After about a week, the print is nicely flattened and ready to move to a portfolio. If you don't have a portfolio, you can store the print between the foam core for a while. If you put acid-free paper between your prints, you can store a few of them using the foam core "sandwich".

You can get acid-free foam core from most art/craft stores and some frame shops. You can usually get 1 piece (big enough for 2 sheets) for about $12-$15 and most stores will also cut it for you.
