Do Voice/Singing lesses work?

This is for anyone with experience either first hand or someone they know. Did/Do voice/singing lessons actually work.
I know I have a terrible voice, but the truth is I don't know If I am actually singing or just trying to mimic someone else when I sing.
I really don't know if I am singing or not, when I do sing (if that makes sense)
Anyways before dropping serious money on voice/singing lessons, I wanted to know what peoples experiences were.

    I don't know the answer to this, but I'm curious also.

    From what I understand, vocal lessons will teach you the right way to sing. They'll talk about where the vocal is supposed to come from, posture, accentuation of vowels, etc.

    All that said, they won't really change someone's voice. They may just improve it.

    They can't hurt. If anything give them a couple of lessons and if you don't see a need or improvement then your not out too much. I always wanted to go to learn my ranges and proper singing techniques.

    they work for some people...

    having taught guitar, i'd say there are 3 categories of students:

    1) naturals, who were born to play guitar and quickly surpassed my ability to teach them

    2) those who are able to learn, and improve through practicing and more practicing (the majority of students are in this category)

    3) those who are utterly hopeless, and should try to find a new hobby!

    i'm sure its about the same with singing.

    I play guitar and "try" to sing along, the biggest trouble I have is getting an honest response from my family and friends in relation to my singing ability (or lack of).

    are there any online lessons or advice on singing available?

    I think there are several gifts that people who are known to "have a good voice" have. First, they are able to hear pitch accurately and reproduce it, second, they are born with a body that allows them to produce a good tone and a wide range of notes.

    Singing lessons will help with tone production, and they might help with hearing pitch somewhat, but they won't be able to fix the voice of a person who can't be taught to hear pitch and rhythm and recreate a melody.
