Australian garage rockers Jet have announced they’re breaking up.

“After many successful years of writing, recording and touring we wish to announce our discontinuation as a group,” read a statement from the band on its Facebook page. “From the many pubs, theatres, stadiums and festivals all across the world it was the fans that made our amazing story possible and we wish to thank them all. Thank you, and goodnight.”

The band had been active touring in 2009 and 2010, including as support on major Australian tours for Green Day and Powderfinger, respectively, but did not do any major performances in 2011.

The band formed in Melbourne in 2001 and had a hit in 2003 with the raucous “Are You Gonna Be My Girl.”

Before the breakup, guitarist/vocalist Nic Cester and lead guitarist Cameron Muncey left the band, forcing a hiatus, while bassist Matt Wilson and drummer Chris Cester went on to form “doom-disco” band the Damndogs.

Well I guess that means they won't be coming back to the Dunsborough Pub to play the promised make up show for the gig they cancelled in 2004 as their star status rose.
  • not a surprise. any time a band goes on a hiatus that isn't explained it usually means the end. I just listened to Shaka Rock yesterday. First time I had listened to them in a while.

Bummer, really liked them. Shaka Rock had some great songs like Start the Show, or Black Hearts (On Fire), wished they made more songs.

Didn't they have one song?! :D

They were more like a one album wonder. Get Born had a few hits like Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Cold Hard Bitch, Rollover DJ, & Look What You've Done.

I'd say compared to 99% of bands out there, you could consider them successful.

Not much of a blow to me but I have their debut and it is a really good listen. Cold Hearted Bitch is a great piece of Antipodean rawk... I didn't know they had lasted this long..
