PJ20 book!

When it first came out I thought "Yay! another full-color picture book about a great band with some linear notes injected! *sarcastic voice*..."

WRONG! It's pretty great! I have the deluxe dvd of PJ20 (because I'm a total PJ whore) and it's pretty in-depth. The book is SOOOO a great accompaniment to the movie tho. Lots more insight (especially into the drummer info, all of 60 seconds of total movie time) into the entire timeline of PJ and MLB and Temple of the Dog. I'm not even a quarter of the way into it, but I'm REALLY impressed and just thought I'd share what I thought of the book. I guess for some reason I just had really low expectations and it has so far blown those away.

Have a good one kids!
Cheers and thanks!

I loved the book, I started off by listening to Greenriver then Mother Love Bone as I read the beginning and as I hit each album in the book I listened to the corresponding CD including Temple Of The Dog, if a CD ran out I listened to a PJ bootleg to fill the gap - great book and got me back to giving all the albums a go instead of picking my faves out. Loved every minute of it! :D

I have the book and loved it, been trying to get other people to read it.

I've about to get the Pearl Jam vs. Ames and Lance Mercer books, are they "must haves" as well?

This just reminded me that I never finished the book. I made it to 2004 and stopped reading it for some reason, thinking I'd get back to it in a few days. That was a few months ago. I need to find out what they did after Riot Act!

It's a damn good book though. Very detailed and a lot of new and personal stories from their history.
  • The book is simply amazing!
It includes so much interesting information, easily the best PJ-20 release.

As always the book is better than the film, the OST is also a cracker. The book, DVD and Cd all sit very well together, I'm glad they released the lot, just wish I could get my hands on triple DVD or Blu-ray.

the background insights behind betterman was worth the price of the book, alone

that song was always top 3 songs on my list and it moved an inch closer to the top, after reading the pj20 book
  • I could not have been more happy when I got the book! I thought it was very detailed and well organized. Just one question on page 57, July 4th, 2nd paragraph, 3rd line, 2nd word is that a typo :D just thought I would send some one in a mission  and I never find any typos because I am a very bad editor so if it is one I will be very happy...and if not I will feel very stupid for posting this :D

That was one of my favourite moments in the book, for sure.

For those that enjoyed the book (as I did), I can also recommend Mark Yarm's Everybody Loves Our Town, the recent oral history of the grunge scene, which I finished reading last weekend. There's not as much in the photo/art department--it's not a coffee-table book, so photos are limited to a couple of bundles in the middle--but their band photo of Green River is priceless. The book is a thorough, well-researched oral history, with interview quotes from pretty much everybody who was anybody in the big and small bands out of Seattle, including archival quotes from those who are no longer with us.

Obviously, it focuses on a broader subject than just PJ, but there is plenty of good stuff related to the band. There's more detail about Andy Wood and Mother Love Bone, and some overlap with stories from PJ20 about Pearl Jam, but this book covers nearly everyone in the scene, from those who broke big (PJ, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains) to those who were important parts of the circle without becoming household names (Tad, Mudhoney, Gruntruck, Skin Yard, Melvins, The Gits, etc). And the personal nature of the text--direct quotes--lends emotional impact to both the successes and the tragedies. A highly recommended read for fans of the so-called "Seattle Sound."

Not sure about the differences, haven't seen the paperback yet, but, if your on facebook, look for the "Everybody Loves Our Town" page. He is giving out signed paper-back copies of his book this week.
I'm going to buy this one in hardcover, I thought it was excellent & very worthy of a second read. Just as the PJ20 book is.

It's a really cool book. I finished it in probably 4 days or so because I couldn't put it down when I first opened it. The parts I liked the most when they went through the discography of each album in detail and talked about the album's inspiration and meanings behind some of the songs, etc.

I absolutely LOVE this book. I first borrowed it from the library, and immediately realized I needed my own, because I couldn't mark up the library book to highlight al the songs named in certain performances so that I could go check for them or seek out that particular bootleg! It's an absolute must have for a big fan, and particularly for one who collects bootlegs. I read the book with my mp3 player attached to me and my computer by my side so that I could check out all the shows, events, songs, articles , etc etc etc relating to what the book references, or just to dig deeper into stuff the book touches on. I've never had so much fun reading a book in my life! ... and I LOVE books and read a lot of them, so that's saying something!

One complaint though. I find the layout and design pretty awful. I don't really care because the written content (and some of the photos of documents and hand written notes) are what I really care about. But seriously, the design and layout sucks. And I know there are thousands of way better photos they could have used. I don't get why they chose to use so many random, fuzzy, can't -see-anything photos.
