"No matter how cold the winter, there's a springtime ahead"
I thought I would share this. I teach special education students who live in a residential setting because most of them have been abused etc. Every morning they have a writing prompt to complete in their journal. Today I wrote: "No matter how cold the winter, there's a spring time ahead." and I asked them to interpret the meaning of this quote.
Here is one of the journal entries.
Winter to Spring
I think that this quote is saying no matter how low and cold you get, things can always get better. I think that winter is referring to the bad, hard times, and spring refers to the good times. I believe what it is saying. I think that there are good times and bad times. I believe that you have to get past the bad times to reach the good times. This is how it has been and how it will be. I like how the author refers to the bad times as winter because a lot of people don't like winter. The author also refers to spring as the good times because lots of people like spring. Just like how people don't like bad times, but they like good times. There are always good times ahead, even if it doesn't look like it. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. I used to not believe that, but I got to a better place. I used to think that nothing would ever get better, and I was doomed to have a horrible life. My life got better though. I got through the bad times and now I am transitioning into good times.
Well said, I think!! 8-)

Beautifully said!
I had that verse put on a wood plaque years ago, and hung it in my kitchen. I can't wait to tell my family and friends, who are always admiring it, this story.

Love this, very good phrase to keep in mind.

This is one of those lyrics that you cling to in times of trouble. I know that I myself clung to it for a year and a half of unemployment, and it really kept me going - in fact, that whole song did - I lived that song! I made a 5,000 mile move back to my own 'heaven' after nearly losing everything...and it was the best thing I've done in a very long time. The song leaves the end of the story sort of open-ended...but it my version, it came out just great!
That one of these students could write with hope, after all they had been through, is truly astounding...and so uplifting. If a human soul can make it through something like that and still have hope for a springtime....there is hope for everyone!

My students are 9th through 12th grade (special ed.).He is in the 10th grade and has had a pretty rough life- very quiet kiddo. I use a lot of PJ when we study poetry, because they like to use their music. On Fridays, we have music share day-they all tease me about Pearl Jam. It's fun. :P0

DefinitelyThe thing I like most about time is that it's not real. It's all in the head. Sure, it's a useful trick to use if you want to meet someone at a specific place in the universe and have tea or coffee- but that's all it is- a trick. There is no such thing as the past. It exists only in the memory. There is no such thing as the future. It exists only in our imagination. If our watches were truly accurate, the only thing they would ever say is "Now". That's what time it is. It's "Now". - Damien Echols0 -

That is just fabulous!!!
And it's awesome that the kids like the music!
I am walking evidence that the music this band produces can be a huge comfort to people going through major crap in their lives. And I know of a few others on this board who feel the same way.
Maybe you can impart a life-long love of PJ to these kids - give them one more tool to put in the tool chest marked 'how to cope with life when the whole thing seems totally FUBAR".
Just great!!!!!0 -
very creative you are and your student's writing spot on.
There is no mentor like a good teacher!
ours have made such a difference in my kids lives, thanks for all you do
