She Sings

She sings hallelujah
with tears in her throat
whilst her knees ride
the same floorboards
that placed splinters
tenderly down her back,
a reminder, of how she’d
wished for a mocking bird
with feathers so soft
they’d sweep away the pain
or at least,
mop up the blood
spilt, from every wooden prick
she’d ever said yes to.
