i've been reading a lot of comments on here about how dave a and/or matt are pearl jams best drummers, so i figured it was about time to get a thread going about pearl jams *actual* best drummer: jack irons. sure, dave was much more flashy and matt might keep the group tighter when playing live, but the sounds jack created in the studio can't be matched. he also played a kit 1/3 the size of dave's. not to mention matt has the most boring sound live and in the studio. if anyone needs further proof about my jack irons claims just take a listen to no code and yield. jack irons is pearl jam's john bonham.

edit: john bonham was led zeppelin's jack irons ; ) jk

Although I liked Matt best for the band overall I think Jack is better with PJ in the studio. I mean just listen to In My Tree, Who You Are or Given To Fly. Even Stupid Mop has a great beat to it!

The Jack Irons era of the band is still their highpoint, IMO.

He's a really unique drummer and I loved what he brought to their sound.

Jack can be found on Facebook. He posts info about what he is in to and he will interact with you.

    Nice guy

  • always love his groove and what he bringed to the evolution of that band (no code is my favorite album).
Now my point of view about PJ's drummers is that they had been really lucky in that departement because Dave, Jack and now Matt are fantastic musicians with their own style.
As a bassguitar player I would love to play with any of them  .

is it a group page or an actual profile?
  • I really enjoyed PJ with Jack on drums. I saw him live with PJ back in 1996 when they played Savage Hall in Toledo, OH. He definitely brought a different sound to PJ. I really enjoyed his work !

His own page... Jack Irons... I think he has a picture of him playing drums as his avatar.

i agree. "lukin" for example. not the greatest song (imo), but the drums are absolutely unreal.
  • Jack Irons is my favourite Pearl Jam drummer.
He gives the band a real special sound on No Code and Yield.
There's something magical about his drum style.
If Matt is to much involved in Soundgarden one day, I would love to have Jack back in the band.

3:04ish.... even that right there makes the song sound so much better live. not trying to pick apart matt cameron, but the way he does it (stops playing all together) is boring. hitting the snare those few times just makes the song so so so so so so so so good. i can't enough about jack irons.

    ps
thanks to that guy who posts all of those videos on youtube. his channel is always a reliable source when looking for a live song from any era of the band. you kick ass.
