Wow first let me say thanks for all the responses. I completely understand the many opinions posted so far. As far as not liking Dave, I truly appreciate aesthetic differences and questions of taste are well always going to be debated (My roommate in college used to say Dave sounded like a muppet and Eddie was indecipherable). I would say we agree to disagree. I particularly appreciate the views on how the two singers sounds are so different and think that would make for part of the dynamic. Some of the greatest compilations have come from unlikely pairings.

I do think it is interesting to see how similar some (certainly not all) of their influences are shared. (Beatles, Dylan, Neil, Cash, Marley) I was in the mud at ACL to see both bands (on separate nights) and was thinking how cool it would be to hear them together. I was recently watching PJ20 and Dave in Europe and thinking about how their sounds had evolved so much over the years from my first experiences with them. I used to teach classes called One Sweet World:The politics and poetry of Dave Matthews, and Act UP! The Power of Protest Performance with Pearl Jam and I realized how much the artists had in common in the themes of their lyrics and in the political views they held. They are the Jungian archetypes of my generation the dark angst ridden poet who captures the seething undercurrent of rage of disgruntled middle class Americans and the happy live life in the moment troubador who sings about our desire to revel and party like there is no tomorrow. But over time there music has come closer after the murder of Dave's sister and his bout with depression his music took on deeply dark overtones of Bartender and Big Eyed Fish and with Eddie's age came the mellow beauty of such songs as Just Breathe and Society.

Many of you have mentioned their concert experience, which is of course the purest form of their music. I don't consider myself a concert veteran (with only 11 PJ shows and 23 DMB/D&T/Dave solo shows) compared to the many of you who have posted, but I think seeing their shows is the closest thing to a religious experience in my life. I started out as a drunken college student at their shows but have since gone on to take my students to them and sit in the fan club seats (away from the drunks on the lawn ) and now as the father of two boys (4 yrs old, and 9 months old) I look forward to being able to take them as well. I believe the point I was trying to make that it seems hard to find two performers who have lasted and still have a broad appeal to fans both young and veteran. I look forward to more of your posts.

    Yep
Ed is above and beyond him on a musical levelIMO.

Not even close. Dave is about 5x the guitar player that Ed is. Ed is mostly open chords and beginner level finger picking.

Your telling me Phish has done less than Dave. What about selling 80,000 ticekts to festivals with only them on the bill. Last I checked Dave's fest had a full bill of other bands. Plus Dave sucks. Ed wouldn't be caught dead with him.

Ticket sales are not for me the full measure of a band's artistry, and I certainly would not want to use this forum as a DMB apologia but...

While I respect DMB and their fans, I hope that this never happens. I guess it's like when all of my friends tell me Pearl Jam sucks, this is the exact way I feel about Dave Matthews. Never really got into them.

Some of you would probably call me crazy, but lately I have been listening to a lot of old country music, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, not that pop, slick bullshit (Kenny Chesney, etc.) that the masses are listening to today, the old stuff. I would love to hear Ed collaborate with some old school country music singers. I think that would be kind of cool.

You know I too love the classic country that was anti-Nashville sound. I am sure you have heard Eddie's 25 Minutes to Go, but if you haven't heard his Hurt (technically a Trent Reznor but most associated with Cash) it is magnificent.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anoMp-zDdkA

I think it is interesting that this is yet another link between Eddie and Dave, with Dave recording with Cash on For You http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20NlNLPyR1U as well as covering Long Black Veil (often with Emmylou Harris). Dave has played tons of stuff with Willie through Farm Aid and covers one of my favorite Willie tunes Ain't it Funny How Time Slips Away. He says he wrote Crush after being inspired by Willie. They also have collaborated on Gravedigger.

As far as Merle I'm not sure if his politics would jive with Eddie and Dave's. But would be cool.

  • I respect your opinion but this would be a nightmare for me. I judt can't listen to DMB. Been to two of their live shows and I disliked them more upon leaving each of them. I can't really explain why but I just couldn't stand them. Maybe it was all the people standing around and talking the entire show. I felt like I was at some kind of 'meet and greet' social event and I didn't intend to meet anyone.

I really hate that some people think they're even comparable. Just my opinion.

sorry, its not that I don't like Dave's music, but their styles are so different I can't imagine it working.

I would like to see any of the following though, something more than singing back up or jumping on stage for a song.

Ed and Michael Stipe. I think these two really like and respect each other

I appreciate the stylistic difference point that has been made by several posters and as a fan agree that their styles are completely different but I think as talented musicians sharing common ground about being in two of the biggest musical acts of twenty years that it would prove interesting. Who would have thought Johnny Cash could record with Joe Strummer...

Anything Ed wanted to do with Stipe would be worth listening to. The funny thing is that my two favorite bands after PJ and DMB are U2 and REM. They were the bands I grew up with in the 80s that meant something to me and have played together for 30 years. I was broken hearted when REM finally called it quits this year.

To the other acts, my broader point was not simply great to hear play together, but the Storyteller component and retrospective on 20 years of music particularly their thoughts on the industry, influences, contemporary musicians... Not simply a concert but an inside view of these two key artists.

You know it is true and disheartening to be at a show where everyone is talking through ballads, new songs or on their phones. I do not disagree that there is a distasteful element at large concerts particularly DMB shows, but I have been fortunate at both PJ and DMB shows to have seats in sections with genuine fans of the bands usually around my age as well (38 gulp  )

I would say this would be a better match.

"On the real," though, I've seen DMB twice(free tickets), both times at the gorge, and was not impressed. Unfortunately I HAVEN'T seen PJ at the gorge, but would much rather spend my time listening to the boxset than ever going to another DMB concert

i hate dave matthews band. when it comes to 90s music i think they're the lowest of the low... even lower than bush and hole (not a sexual innuendo). seriously, how does anyone listen to them and not cringe and/or laugh? he's such a dick, his lyrics are awful, his voice could make the deaf cringe, and the music is shit. absolute shit. i know this is wrong but i have a strong tendency to judge bands by their fan base (i think many people are guilty of this) and i have never met a dave matthews fan that hasn't annoyed the piss out of me. frat boys and soccer moms (i don't care if a soccer mom reads this). keep dave matthews in your mini vans along side bon jovi and john mayer where it belongs.

I'm a DMB fan. So, guilty by affiliation, you've labelled me as annoying. While this might be true, it is not so evident as the fact that you, sir, may just be an internet buffoon of the classic mold. Anyone can make generalizations. For example, judging by your prose, one could make an inference that you are the proud owner of one truck, one dog, and one tooth. I mean, just look at your writing skills: did you know you were supposed to capitalize the beginning of each sentence? Geez man.

  • i hate dave matthews band. when it comes to 90s music i think they're the lowest of the low... even lower than bush and hole (not a sexual innuendo). seriously, how does anyone listen to them and not cringe and/or laugh? he's such a dick, his lyrics are awful, his voice could make the deaf cringe, and the music is shit. absolute shit. i know this is wrong but i have a strong tendency to judge bands by their fan base (i think many people are guilty of this) and i have never met a dave matthews fan that hasn't annoyed the piss out of me. frat boys and soccer moms (i don't care if a soccer mom reads this). keep dave matthews in your mini vans along side bon jovi and john mayer where it belongs.

Geez man.

oh okay, i'll work on my grammar skills. question: you wrote "were supposed to capitalize"... does that mean i only have to capitalize after the fact?

Semantics and grammar isn't really the disagreement here. I am a Warehouse member as well. If someone was knocking PJ on the forums there, I would not leave their utterings unchallenged. Lots of people talk about Phish and other bands on this site that I couldn't care less about; however, I do not ruthlessly bash them or the band (for a number of reasons). If I did, I would expect a retort that might be less than friendly.

I really like DMB and I really like PJ. Two of my favourite bands for sure. It's disappointing you do not share the exact tastes as myself, however, I am glad we can agree that PJ is one of the best bands out there.
