Shut out on PJ20 Vinyl?!?!?!?!?!?

I prefer to not buy my PJ Vinyl from the Ten Club, I don't like paying shipping, and I like to support my local independent record stores... I called Twist and Shout, a HUGE record store in Denver last week about getting a PJ20 Vinyl. I buy a lot of vinyl there. They said they would have 1 in on Tuesday, get there early and I'll get it. When I got to the counter and asked if they had it, they guy looked uncomfortable, then told me it was on eBay? I asked what he meant, told him I am quite the PJ fan, own ALL their vinyl, he asked if I'd be willing to pay $120 for it. I said NOPE, 10C sold it for $35, Amazon also, I'll get it somewhere else.

Turns out, this is common record store practice.

  • That's really cheeky of them, especially as you reserved a copy. You'd have thought they'd have wanted to keep your custom.

I would tell him that he may have lost a great customer. That is bullshit. I understand people putting things on EBay.... but stores? That is unreal. What is next?

Yes, I put down the other Pearl Jam vinyl in my hands and walked out... NEVER WILL I SHOP THERE AGAIN!!!!!! I also called on my way home to speak with a manager... I was told that is the "business" aspect of owning a record shop... I felt sick to my stomach when I realized they were the recipient of the orange Pearl Jam vinyl for Denver... I feel like I should email the 10C about this...

10c did not sell it for $35. neither did Amazon.

What a difference a store makes. Yesterday I posted my success story of calling every record store in Iowa for the PJ20 LP. I called ZZZ Records in Des Moines, IA and they had one copy left. Dan was the person helping me and was more than helpful. He even mailed it priority so I should have it tomorrow or Thursday. The best part of it all was that he mentioned that the store was asking $100 for the LP. I said no problem. Then he said yea I saw these going for $150 or more on EBay. I said yea I saw that too but, I promised I will be spinning it ASAP. Very honest and helpful. Thanks again ZZZ Records!

Yeah, I second that. What was it from 10C? $60? something like that.

Over $60 with shipping, I don't like getting vinyl shipped, it's too fragile... I like walking into a store, picking it up on the shelf, and buying it... all that has changed today...

So you don't like paying over face value for vinyl, but you don't mind selling PJ posters on your website for huge markups?

I called a place in Minnesota and got the same story, they had two left and were putting them on Amazon. I cant blame a store, it would be one thing if Bestbuy were doing this, but these are independently owned stores and they need to make every buck they can to stay in business.

Now, they cant do this for RSD until after 30 days have passed since RSD, otherwise they are banned from RSD.

$120 for a PJ20 vinyl seems fair these days too compared to some of the prices on ebay.

More fair than the $350 you're charging fans for a PJ Hawaii poster.
