I posted this in Other Music but someone suggested I post it here since it is Pearl Jam related and more people would see it...

My friend's band My Pet Dragon did this cover of Release. I played it for some PJ friends this weekend and they were blown away. I thought I would share it here. I hope you enjoy it. :D

I really liked the cover. Has a 'trippy' feel to it...thanks for sharing!

hmmm... have never considered that comparison. But then again, I'm not really familiar with Third Eye Blind beyond their semi-charmed hits from the radio. I am a huge My Pet Dragon fan so perhaps I should check out 3EB. ;)

I really enjoyed this cover! They did a great job with it.
The thing I like most about time is that it's not real. It's all in the head. Sure, it's a useful trick to use if you want to meet someone at a specific place in the universe and have tea or coffee- but that's all it is- a trick. There is no such thing as the past. It exists only in the memory. There is no such thing as the future. It exists only in our imagination. If our watches were truly accurate, the only thing they would ever say is "Now". That's what time it is. It's "Now". - Damien Echols

I really liked it, too. Very different, but good. I liked how it concentrated more on the music than on the voice, makes me even more appreciate the original song melody- and instrumentation-wise. Some sitar sounds would also have fit in there quite well :)
  • When I saw who posted it I knew it was going to be good and it did not disappoint.

this song means a lot to me...
and they did a great job covering it!

i know how to play this on guitar, but i can't do it...
it's too personal for me. and when i do, i can't sing it for some reason. i lose my voice.

love hearing how other bands/musicians interpret songs, though...
your friends did a great job, Sara.

Thanks for listening, Matt! ...when my friend sent this to me he was so excited for me to hear it, and I was so worried, because this song is so personal for me too. i was worried i wasn't going to like it, but i just fell in love with it. i really had no need to be worried. :D

    yeah...
covers are a tricky thing. you really have to to take the song & make your own mark on it...your friends did that. they really did.

I did not take to it as much as others that have posted here, but the problem may be I like the original way too much. It is an interesting take on the song, but it just does not work for me.

I think my problem with it might be that I feel the song or the emotion in the song has been de-personalized a bit. Personal taste and all that stuff...

    Peace.

yeah that was fantastic. Took BALLS to cover that song and they did it really well while making their own mark on it. Friggin lovely.

    Not too shabby.

Release is probably my favorite PJ song, so while I'm going to say that I like this cover, one of the things I love about the song so much is the change in dynamics between the verse and chorus, particularly the last verse when played live...right before the big ending. This didn't really have that. I also would have kept just the one vocal with the lower pitch during the verse, then had the layered vocals with the different octaves in the chorus.

All in all though, it's pretty good and a creative take on it.
