It does? Because if this was Communist Russia there would be no Catholic School at all.0 -
So, I'm guessing they teach be candlelight at her school with Thomas Edison having been an atheist.

A few days back she asked me for some music suggestions, so I suggested that she listen to Rise. She loved it, and put together a routine. The talent show theme was to showcase your faith and talents (she goes to a catholic school).
A couple hours after her audition (which went very well) a teacher pulled her aside to tell her that she would not be in the show. The reason was that one of the teachers coordinating the talent show decided to do some research on Eddie Vedder. She would not allow a song to be in the talent show that is written and performed by an atheist.
Strong kid that my daughter is, she handled the situation well. I think there are many important lessons for her (and me) here. She still loves the song, and it's given her a new perspective on school, authority, and probably some other things I don't even realize. My first reaction was that it is time for a different school, but that's not really feasible just yet.
My second reaction was that the whole incident is captured pretty nicely by the lyrics of the song, "such is the way of the world ..."
Anyhow, I thought some of you might be interested in the story.
Wow. That's absolutely crazy. I'm dumbfounded. There is absolutely no justification for her rationale no matter how you look at it. It's not an anti-God song being performed by your daughter. It's not even an anti-God song being used as background music for your daughter to dance to. It's a perfectly awesome song that just happens to have been written by an atheist that is being used as background music for a dance performance. That is so far removed from being wrong that there is absolutely no logic behind it at all. Next they'll be saying that songs can't be used if the writer's mother is an atheist, or if the writer is a Christian but doesn't go to the right church, or if anyone who ever performed the song ever had an abortion. I can't understand why she would possibly have even looked him up (except that she probably really liked the song and wanted to hear more of his work). Did she do religious background checks on all the other musicians whose music is ever used at a school event?? I think you should at least demand that they are fair about it - then the other parents will probably get up in arms too. That's just fucking crazy. When are they going to get an emoticon of a head shaking in disgust? :x
+1000. I totally agree. This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. And, yes, why did she choose HIM to look up??! The whole thing is rather absurd.0 -

There is only one thing not allowed in the Pearl Jam Religion – “You can’t fucking Twitter – I hate that shit.”
Actually..Lost In Ohio wrote that (sorry  not very good at keeping the red box around quotes)
However, I for one am quite glad Ed doesn't like "that shit" as it might keep him away from writing more of the songs that, oh I don't know, MILLIONS, crave to hear. There is spirituality in the work of Pearl Jam & Ed, he has "It", what ever that is which draws people to him. He, they, make us FEEL! How do you feel when they walk out onto the stage, at that moment...how many have a lump in their throat. How many eyes well up when they hear magic & beauty fill a room...its an undeniable connection. Just maybe, we should all feel sorry for this teacher. I'm going to try really hard not to judge her actions. It might be that she doesn't feel, maybe her own soul is crying out for the healing sustenance of sound. I've worked with children for over twenty years, in a far different capacity than a teacher. We talk all the time about embracing differences & being accepting & I always say how bloody boring would life be if we all liked the same things. ......And... if Pearl Jam is a religion...sign me up :!:0 -

Seems like she has a personal problem with Ed. Maybe she got dumped at some point by a diehard PJ fan. And I guess a Marilyn Manson song would be out of the question.0 -
she should have gotten on stage... and just stood there singing Rise0

I wonder what a satanic church would think of someone singing Amazing Grace at their talent showAll I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow
They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all0 -

I have lived with his heavenly voice and life giving lyrics. He is a force for me.
I do not 'know' a more spiritual person.
So not only is this school wrong to ban music from an atheist,
they couldn't be more wrong about Eddie.
I am assuming you are a religious family as she attends Catholic school.
Being a fan of Eddie's and he an atheist, you have taught her to
not judge on beliefs. This a valuable lesson, one set by example
within your home.
Closed minds and hearts are in every belief as are open minds and hearts.
If it were my child I might suggest to her to write letter to explain what the song means
to her, who Mr Vedder is and why the song was chosen. To encapsulate her feelings.
This not only for the benefit of my child learning to speak out for what she believes
but to share her beliefs with those that may allow their hearts to feel.
This is the power of change. Whether she sends that letter or not, is her choice.
It may also put a positive to a negative situation. The lessons she learned here about school,
authority should come with some empowerment not just disappointment.0
