Hey thanks for the responses. It felt kind of like a punch to the gut talking to her today, and this is taking some of the sting out of that.

So, to turn things around a bit, what are the best Pearl Jam songs for kids?!

As a catholic, who went to catholic school, I find this whole thing very very weird! Eddie - to me - comes across as a very deep thinker, a lover of nature and of solitude, and, well, a bit of a guru really! He might have said in interviews that he doesn't like religion because it causes wars, and fair call... but listen to his lyrics!

School is a brutal place for kids, catholic or otherwise.

anywho... best Pearl jam songs for kids? All of 'em! :)

My boy is 5 and has loved PJ since he was 2. He says he only likes the fast songs (favourites - Gonna see my friend, Spin the black circle, The Fixer), but really, as long as Eddie is singing it, he's happy. He even sat thru Water on the Road - not a lot of fast songs there!

Big Wave... It was in Surf's Up. Hahaha... Oh shit it talks about evolution.

i can't believe that no ones mentioned faithfull. ed makes a reference to"the man upstairs" in the song. i'm not sure how he feels, but as someone mentioned previously, he does make GOD references at a LOT of shows. i am married to a preachers daughter & have witnessed firsthand how fuct church & the like can be. i have faith, but more along the lines of what ed said in the interveiw with garafolo.i don't flaunt my faith or judge others. i try to do unto others as i would have them do unto me.
in my early 20's i studied 7 different religions. they all had the same basic principles, which i found to be odd, since there were so many wars started by religion throughout the years. rise helped me through a particularly painful time. a friends mother had committed suicide & i listened to into the wild for perspective during the first couple of days. i found it to be an extremely helpful record for that. anyway, teachers like that are the reason a lot of children leave school. your daughter sounds like an extremely strong, well rounded person to have dealt with that in the manner she did. kudos to you as a parent & welcome...eddie's faith is his own business as is each individuals. i would've been a punk & tried to dance to wooden jesus by temple of the dog or get born again by a.i.c. or 4th of july by soundgarden.... i dropped out of school for various reasons. teacher harrassment being number one. my wife is a teacher, though. she would love to have more parents like you at her school.

Hmm. I went to a Catholic high school waaay back in the day (I'm not Catholic, but the school was). Our senior "class song" choice was vetoed by teachers since it was too modern to appeal to our grandparents (so we had to sit through the theme from "Mahogany," instead. :x); there was nothing offensive about the chosen song, the teachers just didn't like it.

Discourse on a variety of topics also was limited. I would say that some of this was expected -- this is a Catholic school, parents have made a choice to send their children to the school, even paying money for the privilege, so to some extent there is an implicit assumption of consent to abide by administration policy/whim/bias/whatever.

On the other hand, looking back as an adult, I wish my teenage self had been able to stand up to and perhaps stop the persistent bad behavior exhibited by some of the teachers and staff: sexual harassment, bullying, etc. The entire student body knew which teachers would be inappropriate and demeaning to the girls, and which administrator was super-creepy around the cheerleaders, and nobody said anything. There was a definite feeling that making waves and calling out the adults on their actions would lead to nothing but trouble. There were not the same avenues for resolution that there are in public school.

Thinking as a parent, I would say that the choice you and your daughter need to make revolves around when to make a stand -- is this a battle worth fighting? Rise is a beautiful song, uplifting, nothing remotely offensive about it. I do not see how you or your daughter could have anticipated there would be trouble if you chose this song. If you were to choose to fight this silly, silly decision, you might perhaps request a list, in writing, of approved (Catholic?) artists (my guess -- avoid Sinead O'Connor and Cat Stevens/ Yusuf Islam); then push back -- must the artist merely be Catholic, or must they be a Catholic in good standing? Are we assuming that all Catholics possess identical beliefs? Are you really expected to teach your daughter that her religious life is based not on a personal faith/ relationship with God, but on acting out or parroting what she hears in religion class? Can one not find God in all realms of life, not merely within the pages of the Bible?

I don't know. It seems to me that one could have a very interesting debate about the reasoning (or lack thereof) behind the teacher's decision. But first you have to decide if it is worth the fight.

It certainly sounds like this is a good time to talk to your daughter about how adults are not always right and how they are just as capable of making bad decisions as kids are. I think it also opens the door to a very interesting discussion with your child about faith and beliefs.

As for PJ songs for kids -- um, well, I do not censor the songs around here. I avoided some music when the kids were really young, and I still tend to avoid Rage Against the Machine ("Killing In the Name"), but beyond that, given that I take my boys to PJ shows with me, I see no reason to filter the music. The songs are of high musical quality and the lyrics are thoughtful -- I'm more concerned about a song's message than I am about the appearance of the F-word.

    This is really crazy.

If you choose to keep your daughter in the school, I would be careful as to how far you go with this, because faculty/staff/parents can find out and be pretty harsh.

If not, then go to the administration, local news, the Catholic Diocese, and anyone else.

Even though it doesn't matter, I do recall in Iconoclasts, Ed looking around at the beauty of nature and questioning how one could not believe in a higher power. Not organized religion, but a sense of spirituality.

My 10 year old daughter had an audition for her school talent show today; she is a ballet dancer. A few days back she asked me for some music suggestions, so I suggested that she listen to Rise. She loved it, and put together a routine. The talent show theme was to showcase your faith and talents (she goes to a catholic school).

A couple hours after her audition (which went very well) a teacher pulled her aside to tell her that she would not be in the show. The reason was that one of the teachers coordinating the talent show decided to do some research on Eddie Vedder. She would not allow a song to be in the talent show that is written and performed by an atheist.

Strong kid that my daughter is, she handled the situation well. I think there are many important lessons for her (and me) here. She still loves the song, and it's given her a new perspective on school, authority, and probably some other things I don't even realize. My first reaction was that it is time for a different school, but that's not really feasible just yet.

My second reaction was that the whole incident is captured pretty nicely by the lyrics of the song, "such is the way of the world ..."

Anyhow, I thought some of you might be interested in the story.

I don't think Ed has ever said he was ever anything. Christian or Atheist or anything else for that matter.

  • The Catholic Church is such a bad example of Christianity. It really bothers me that they are the spokespeople for the Faith.

In all fairness, it IS a Catholic School. They should have the right to edit the content of their activities... just like the rights of a Public School to omit 'Silent Night, Holy Night' from their Christmas shows... right?

    Case closed, end of story.

Anyone with a opinion opposite of religion and their total bullshit fantasy story of all powerful man in the sky you MUST follow and worship or your soul (not a real thing FYI) will burn in Hell (also not real) must be ignored.

Religion flourishes on the fact that facts don't exist.

People can believe in what they wish, but because a person is "religious" or not should have nothing to do with a good kid dancing to a powerful song.

Who do you complain to though??

Even the Pope/Catholism thought it was okay to ignore the priests molestations and the holocaust.

As long as the money is flowing in, the people are following space man... Then all is good!

Ed spoke tonight about how since it was National Prayer Day today, he should mention that the band were thinking of applying to the U.S. Government to be sanctioned, making Pearl Jam a legitimate religion, and I just had to laugh – for some of us, they already are a religion. If you’re reading this, you’re probably one of the Faithfull (we got that tonight by the way… Since I was fortunate enough to be Row 3 center, I held up a sign during the first chorus of Faithfull that very much reinforced my belief in Pearl Jam – it read “Show #150. Ed smiled, pointed and laughed, throwing his head back between lines. I threw up my hands to testify – “we all believe, we all believe it”. So the PJ religion thing – I get it. Ed spoke of how Stone thought it would be a good idea to be sanctioned – they would be tax exempt, they could do whatever the fuck they want. He said there is only one Commandment, and its “Don’t be an asshole.” Easy enough, I’ll do my best. “Stone is our leader,” Ed told us (damn RIGHT he is!) “(he’s kind of) the Jesus of the band”. There is only one thing not allowed in the Pearl Jam Religion – “You can’t fucking Twitter – I hate that shit.” (Ironically, the founder of Twitter’s last name is Stone btw.) I almost pulled out my Crackberry and Tweeted that.

good stuff... I would love to see the interpretive dance to the line: "i shit and i stink, i'm real, join the club"

btw, there are two potential ironies in this story:
    1. teacher who likely teaches "do not cite from the internet" uses the internet as an information resource
    2. teacher in secular school prohibits student from using atheist's music, plants first seeds of atheistic thinking in student
