  • I'll never understand why fans need to elevate everything to the status of being "the best" simply so they can then turn around and say "I was there".

It's almost as if attending the right shows somehow makes you special.

Yeah, people always want to be at "THE" show. Some people are very competitive in that respect. And the thing is, nobody will ever agree on this, and for many, whatever show they were at was the best show ever.

I remember back in '03 I went to the Dallas show, it was a good show, kind of odd and not my favorite show ever, but I had a great time. I woke up the next morning and logged on here, and somebody had started a thread that was titled something like "You Dallas Fans got screwed - And Here's Why", then the thread was basically the poster (who was not at Dallas or even heard a bootleg) comparing the setlist from the Dallas show to the setlist of the show he had been to, and telling us why we should feel cheated.

There is always going to be "Pearl Jam loves out city/country more than yours" threads, or for shows that the poster was at even if they aren't native, simply because people like to feel like they were there for Pearl Jam history.

I totally agree with your post and It's unfortunate that some people are like this. I had the best of intentions on writing a little review of my PJ20 weekend but after seeing all the other threads where people were going back and forth with one another on the greatness of the event I decided against it. I knew if I did, at some point the thread would just turn into a pissing match about the setlist, the length of the show/# of songs played or how they could of done without all the TOTD songs at a PJ show and the original point of the thread would of been lost in the shuffle.

I've been lucky enough to see 28 excellent Pearl Jam shows throughout their career and I've never once walked away feeling disappointed or short changed in any way and most of those shows would never be considered historic or epic by the fan base. To me that's pretty amazing to say because I have seen TONS of other bands (multiple times as well) where I did walk away with that feeling that the band just mailed in their performance.

To me that's what makes a band great...when they can make fans in every city they play in feel like they've just witnessed the most epic & special show of their life.

    Any of them....

You need to be careful with paper sir, you know how constipated it gets you when you eat it. :-)

P.S. PJ20 was one of a kind. And, I'm sure, so was the Canadian tour. To me, each show is special.

    I agree as well.

And once again it's Dimitri who sums it up best!

Glad I was able to meet you for a brief moment at SPEEDY's party on Saturday. When I saw you in the background on the Jimmy Fallon performance I laughed so hard my wife asked me why. I told her that you were almost as famous as the band members themselves and that I ran into you at PJ20.

    Good times....

On paper, I'd take almost every Canadian setlist over both PJ20 sets. But that's just me. Of course, you can't account for "atmosphere" and things like that, but bootleg wise, I'd take the Canadian sets first.

    +1

It really is apples and oranges - having read many threads, viewed many pictures, and watching Gary's live PJ20 stream - I think PJ20 was more of an overall celebration, including not just a musical performance, but you throw in the museum, the guest appearances, TOTD, and everything else, the whole experience was on a completely different level, and people probably had much broader expectations than just a "run of the mill" 2-3 hour PJ show.

The Canadian tour looks simply to be PJ shows with setlists that f*ckin' rock, and since there's more than 2 shows, the setlists are more varied and bringing some songs out of the closet that don't get played often - particularly the last 2 or 3 shows. I'll probably end up buying PJ20 and a few Canadian boots, but my guess is the last few shows will get more play time than the PJ20 discs...:)

    Two different things.

PJ20 was a huge 2 day event. There's no way to compare it to the intensity of a 2.5 hour show.

Considering I wasn't able to attend PJ20, for me the Canadian tour was better simply because I had the chance to see Pearl Jam three times in the span of a week. I'll never understand why fans need to elevate everything to the status of being "the best" simply so they can then turn around and say "I was there".

It's almost as if attending the right shows somehow makes you special. I've never been to a show that would be considered significant by most fans, yet I consider myself fortunate every time I see the band play. As far as I'm concerned, the best shows are always the ones you attend.
