Idiotic and mean-spirited Pearl Jam article

This was taken from Calgary's local entertainment rag Fast Forward. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion of course, but this girl goes a bit too far with her venomous jabs and broad generalizations. Eddie and the boys must have pissed in her cornflakes one morning, or maybe they turned her down for a date at one time, because the article seems to be written from a very angry/spiteful point of view. Especially when she starts attacking the fans and lumping Pearl Jam in with Creed and Nickelback (and everyone knows that's just crossing the line). There's a comment section below the article. Let her have it, folks!

"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

I wouldn't even give it a second thought. It does look like the writer has some personal grudge. Check out her other articles - the few I looked at don't seem to have the same tone.

Unfortunately Calgary has a long history of idiotic and moronic music critics and reviewers. Not sure why but seems like a lot of them carry a chip on their shoulder and it comes across in their articles and reviews (Mike Bell anyone? ). It's disgusting and embarassing but over the years I've just learned to ignore them and let it roll off me. I know good shit from shineola and don't need a hipster twat telling me otherwise. :)
E agora? Faz xixi na mão e deita fora!
  • the second you read, "Pearl Jam Celebrates 30 Years of Turning Up the Suck" you know, she is an idiot.

oh, and this one: Nirvana and the whole Seattle plaid flannel scene was already old news by the time Ten reached us in western canada?

    she's on crack.

Mike Bell! Wow, that takes me back. That guy was a douchebag of the highest order. I remember he had a massive hate-on for The Tragically Hip which went on for years and years. Every time they'd come to town, he'd always find some new petty insult to hurl in their direction.

    Wow.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but she's clearly one of those "haters" that believe if you like anything popular or any band listened to by more than 25 people, you lose your indie credibility within social hipster circles. She's also struggling to make up for her lack of knowledge and credibility by using "smart" words and clever little phrases. Forget posting a comment - that would require signing up for this rag. #1: 30 Years? I heard journalists are supposed to do some research before puking over their keyboard

#2: What was that article about? A concert? The film? Killing space in some garbage rag?

#3: What's wrong with Guns N Roses? Don't we all wish we could've seen them live in their prime? We should also hate Pink Floyd and only like Radiohead's King of Limbs

    #4: Golden shower reference? Really?

#5: Yes, her X was totally a huge PJ fan.

  • I am ashamed to admit that I currently reside in Calgary after reading that "article". Everyone is entitled to their taste in music (she surprisingly has enough taste to speak out against a Canadian band, Nickleback) but how this woman ever got paid to write such a misinformed personal opinion is shocking. Her editor was either asleep at the wheel or sleeping with her. PJ20 didn't enlighten her to the fact that the band has been around 20 years rather than 30 as she states? The Seattle scene was old news by the time Ten hit western Canada? In case you other tasteless and fickle Pearl Jam fans (as she call us) don't realize, Calgary is hardly a trendsetting locale. Imitating Layne Staley via Jim Morrison? Wasn't Layne Staley from that same passé Seattle music scene? Do you think she is smart enough to realize Mike McCready was a huge part of Mad Season with her hero Layne? Maybe she hasn't heard that The Doors selected Eddie to sing with them at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Eddie was probably wondering who The Doors were and how these old men still had enough money to buy him a plane ticket like the pre-Pearl Jam boys had done.
I could go on at nauseum but I hope that Ms. Leonard has a short and undistinguished career. Maybe some good will come from this debacle. Pearl Jam can put on an epic performance while here in Calgary next week that only a discerning rock enthusiast like herself can find fault with.

  • Thank you. I have to admit it was difficult to contain my emotions long enough to compose my response. I only wish I hadn't ever seen that article. Is it a desperate ratings ploy or the most uninformed music review ever?
  • The comment of Roskilde is really of poor taste... Stomach turning...
