  • It's been 3 days now since our beloved friends from Indonesia and even US started to sell their precious PJ related collection items in an auction to fund this screening in Jakarta

CDs, DVDs, t-shirts, concert posters, all are auctioned until September 19. A day before the screening

Hopefully Farry Aprianto and team in Babi Buta & Bioskop Merdeka won't even need the money gathered from that auction because the ticket and official t-shirt selling goes so well. Latest data showed that 300 more tickets already sold. That means only 200 seats are still available for purchasing now

It's the power of togetherness and I really hope that PJ20 movie is not the end of this. Really wish to see PJ play Jakarta next year! Yeaahhh!!! :D

hahaha, i donated my Ten deluxe and vs/vitalogy deluxe sealed set, hoping it sells face value US$ 20-30, now the price skyrocketing to more than US$ 40, more than the retail price, the bidder just dont care about the price, they just want to help and participate...

  • The screening of PJ20 made it to the biggest newspaper in Indonesia: KOMPAS! The article printed there was originated from this blog: http://hiburan.kompasiana.com/musik/201 ... i-jakarta/

Now that PJ, once again, after all these quite years, made it to national newspaper, hopefully local concert organizer will begin to consider about inviting PJ to play Jakarta :D

  • Indonesian Fans Fought To Get Pearl Jam Film
    Marcel Thee | September 16, 2011

    Your weekend reading:

Back in the 1990s, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain called Pearl Jam a careerist rock band jumping on the then-vogue grunge bandwagon. The insult seems hard to dismiss, especially for those who have seen YouTube footage of lead vocalist Eddie Vedder during his earlier funk-rock days. It didn’t help that Pearl Jam’s founders — guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament – had openly declared their rock-star aspirations, a major faux pas according to the prevailing “I hate fame and success” view of Generation X.

That’s why the first teaser for an upcoming Pearl Jam documentary stirred so much hype when it showed never-before-seen footage of a reconciliation between Cobain and Vedder. The teaser, shown by director Cameron Crowe on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night American talk show, added extra punch to the highly anticipated documentary “Pearl Jam Twenty,” which traces the band’s 20-year career. The film will be screened in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Even before Cobain’s suicide in 1994, rumors surfaced that he and the Pearl Jam singer had symbolically made amends at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards, where they were rumored to have slow danced during Eric Clapton’s performance of “Tears in Heaven.” But until the teaser aired on Fallon’s show, nobody even knew that clip existed.

Soon, fans in Indonesia will have a chance to see the footage themselves, when “Pearl Jam Twenty” is screened at the Rasuna Epicentrum in Kuningan.

“I know I’ll tear up when I see it,” says Tom Hartono, a lifelong grunge fan in flannel who vows to “make it to the film, no matter what.”

Securing a screening of the documentary in Indonesia wasn’t easy. Members of the Pearl Jam Indonesia community, who are responsible for bringing the movie here, say they learned the good news via an announcement on the “Pearl Jam Twenty” Web site.

The group promptly wrote a celebratory statement and published it online. “In other countries, an official ‘PJ20’ screening might not be a big deal,” the statement says. “Heck, even a Pearl Jam concert in other countries might not be a big deal.”

But for many Indonesians who grew up during the 1990s, it certainly is. To them, “Pearl Jam Twenty” is more than just a documentary; it is an acknowledgment of their passion for the band.

“We have been waiting to host an official Pearl Jam event on Indonesian soil,” the statement continues. “The official screening of ‘PJ20’ in Jakarta means recognition for our country, and it gives us greater hope and conviction that one day we will sing and dance at a real Pearl Jam concert here.”

The Pearl Jam Indonesia community began as a simple fan blog, blossomed into a mailing list and eventually become a real community that organizes Pearl Jam tribute concerts and events.

Last August, the group made moves to bring the documentary here. Meiske Taurisia, who founded Bioskop Merdeka, an institution that arranges screenings of local and international films of limited appeal in Indonesia, said Pearl Jam Indonesia member Farry Aprianto approached her to discuss the possibility of a screening.

“I was immediately enthusiastic about the prospect, especially since I also grew up during the ‘Seattle Sound’ era in the ’90s,” Meiske says. “I decided to start making arrangements for the screening right away.”

Meiske, Farry and the rest of the Pearl Jam community were extremely committed to the project, contributing their own money to help pay for the imported film.

“We began to actively pursue the possibility [of a screening] when we learned that four theaters in Singapore were going to screen the documentary,” Farry says.

Fortunately, the documentary’s producer, Vinyl Films, was happy to assist.

“Vinyl Films helped me get in touch with Alliance Media, the distributor,” Meiske says. “After three weeks of negotiations, we were finally approved.”

For Meiske, “Pearl Jama Twenty” is not only a great documentary for its celebration of the band’s music, but also because of director Crowe’s beefy resume.

With the screening just a few days away, Farry and Meiske admit to having a few nerves.

“I think I’ll still have the jitters until we finally get to the [screening day],” Meiske says.
