PJ20 day 17, the statistical guy is the biggest phoney
Okay so I'm watching the statistical guy youtube video the PJ20 site put up today as part of the countdown, at the very beginning of the video the guy says he knows more about Pearl Jam than his job. Well he must be very bad at his job because he does not know anything about Pearl Jam.
While displaying a chart of Pearl Jam's most played songs during each tour tour he points out that Pearl Jam's second most played song of all time, "Alive", took a nose dive during the Binaural tour. He chalked it up to how the band played it so many times they got tired of it. I almost jumped out of my seat, the reason why they didn't play "Alive" that much during the Binaural tour is because of the fact that they stopped playing it after nine fans died during the European tour. They didn't play it again until the last night of the US tour in Seattle, I was there and it was quite moving when they played it. They didn't play it out of respect and mourning the lives lost, not because they were "tired" of playing.
Every night Pearl Jam played during that tour I would go to the various sites like Fivehorizons to check the set-list, everyone saw that they weren't playing "Alive". Everyone knew the reason except the guy in that video I saw today.
I stopped watching the video at that point, pathetic.

That guy is a dumbass for that very reason, but then his "statistical analysis" is really no analysis, either. It is a bunch of counting and graphs.
I'd like to see a site that ranks the frequency of songs played compared to how many times the song could be played. For example, The Fixer will never be played as much as Even Flow because it is 17 years newer, however, how many shows have they played since The Fixer was released and how many of those shows was it played in? Say it has been played in 50 out of 65 shows since at has been released, that would be 77%. That's the number I want to see. I wonder if Even Flow would still be at the top of that list.0 -
was funny..no big deal..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."

Even Flow would definitely still be at the top, there's only a handful of shows that they haven't played it. Given to Fly and Do the Evolution would be my guesses,(percentage-wise) they seem to have
been played almost every night since they were released. From Backspacer I would say Just Breathe.0 -
I've missed Given to Fly in my two shows but have gotten Do the Evolution both times. Can't wait to hear Given to Fly whenever they play it at a show I'm at!Nittany1bn wrote:Even Flow would definitely still be at the top, there's only a handful of shows that they haven't played it. It is a big deal, many fans like myself thought the band was going to break up at the end of that tour. That was a very emotional period.Randalls Island New York 9/29/96 - Oakland Coliseum Oakland California 11/15/97 - MSG New York New York 09/10/98 - Key Arena Seattle Washington 11/05/00, 11/06/00 - PNC Bank Arts Center Holmdel New Jersey 7/14/03 - Tweeter Center Camden New Jersey 5/28/06, MSG New York New York 06/25/08, Spectrum Arena Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 10/27/090 -

it was cool to watch and interesting to see a pearl jam fan in his profession.
making a thread about the statistical guy and calling him a phoney, you have no tact, my friend...but then again...there are a lot on this board.I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.0 -
The guy is smiling and joking about the band not playing "Alive" during the Binaural tour, chalking it up to boredom with the song and no one else finds this amiss? Was anyone here around in 2000, I remember it quite different.
From the Song's Wikipedia page;
"Following the June 2000 Roskilde Festival tragedy in which nine people died during Pearl Jam's set, the band purposely omitted "Alive" from all shows on its 2000 North American tour until the final night in Seattle"

I don't know if it's because I'm from central jersey too, but I agree with you. He should have known about Alive, that was his whole focus. I'm surprised that pearl jam used this clip being it was so wrong.-one thing to remember, always have a good time, all the time0 -
I was at the Seattle II show in 2000 when they played "Alive", it was very emotional. To give folks here perspective about how significant it was that it was missing from sets for both legs of that Binaural tour here's a quote from a fans review of the concert at the time."Just when we're catching our breath, without any intro or any fanfare or anything, catching us totally by surprise -- there are those chords, and you stop for a second because you've heard them for so long that they're second nature, and then -- OH MY GOD! "ALIVE"! There is this 6-person group hug going on in our row, we are crying and screaming and laughing and singing it at the top of our lungs. The people around us, of course, are completely bemused: why are these people who are clearly huge fans getting so emotional over "Alive"? (I think someone explained it to them.) Have you ever been more happy to hear this song, any Pearl Jam song, in your life? I don't think so.
I can't believe it. I can't believe they're playing it. I mean, earlier, during "Off He Goes," I suddenly had this realization and turned to a friend and said, "You know, I think we might get the 'A' word tonight," but I honestly did not think they would play it. Pearl Jam are a band for symbols and the symbolism of its marked absence from the setlist this tour was powerful, and one all the fans respected.
On the other hand, bringing it out here made sense. My first feeling was just this tremendous sense of relief, like the guys were letting go of something. I was happy that they felt strong enough to play this. And we're watching them, we're watching them like hawks -- are they okay, are they doing okay -- and they were for the most part. Stone in particular looks a little emotional towards the end."Randalls Island New York 9/29/96 - Oakland Coliseum Oakland California 11/15/97 - MSG New York New York 09/10/98 - Key Arena Seattle Washington 11/05/00, 11/06/00 - PNC Bank Arts Center Holmdel New Jersey 7/14/03 - Tweeter Center Camden New Jersey 5/28/06, MSG New York New York 06/25/08, Spectrum Arena Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 10/27/090 -

I was on the boards in 2000 and I agree with you. I had the same thought you did when I heard his reasons for why Alive wasn't played often in 2000. Like you said, he must not really know as much about Pearl Jam if he doesn't know the true reason it wasn't played.2003: San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Seattle; 2005: Monterrey; 2006: Chicago 1 & 2, Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Detroit; 2008: West Palm Beach, Tampa; 2009: Austin, LA 3 & 4, San Diego; 2010: Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbus, Indianapolis; 2011: PJ20 1 & 2; 2012: Missoula; 2013: Dallas, Oklahoma City, Seattle; 2014: Tulsa; 2016: Columbia, New York City 1 & 2; 2018: London, Seattle 1 & 2; 2021: Ohana; 2022: Oklahoma City0 -
Th stat tracker app for the Iphone gives the percentages a song has been played since its live debut. Evenflow is at an 89% rate, where as The Fixer is at 95% of the shows since it has been debut. So i guess it has become more rare to see a show where they dont play The Fixer versus a show where they dont play Evenflow... Who Knew.0

You guys are taking this waaay too seriously. Give the guy a break. He did a good job.
Look, I have been a fan since the beginning and I didn't know the little fact that they didn't play Alive after Roskilde, because of what happened at Roskilde. Lighten up a bit. That was a very tragic time, but it is in the past and this is supposed to be a very happy time.0 -

Don't know about the OP, but no big deal to me. I agree just a video to watch once and nothing to get worked up about at all. :thumbup:2003: San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Seattle; 2005: Monterrey; 2006: Chicago 1 & 2, Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Detroit; 2008: West Palm Beach, Tampa; 2009: Austin, LA 3 & 4, San Diego; 2010: Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbus, Indianapolis; 2011: PJ20 1 & 2; 2012: Missoula; 2013: Dallas, Oklahoma City, Seattle; 2014: Tulsa; 2016: Columbia, New York City 1 & 2; 2018: London, Seattle 1 & 2; 2021: Ohana; 2022: Oklahoma City0 -
I watched the video again just to see if I over reacted, I didn't, it's a big gaffe. I'm having a real hard time believing anyone in the Pearl Jam organization even screened the video.
"Alive" was played in Oslo on June 29th, 2000. The next day was the tragedy at Roskilde.
Pearl Jam didn't play "Alive" again until November 6th, 2000 the second night in Seattle and the final night of the Binaural tour. They went 47 shows without playing "Alive", the reason why obviously very symbolic.Randalls Island New York 9/29/96 - Oakland Coliseum Oakland California 11/15/97 - MSG New York New York 09/10/98 - Key Arena Seattle Washington 11/05/00, 11/06/00 - PNC Bank Arts Center Holmdel New Jersey 7/14/03 - Tweeter Center Camden New Jersey 5/28/06, MSG New York New York 06/25/08, Spectrum Arena Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 10/27/090 -
I honestly thought that video was a joke. Am I the only one that actually laughed out loud upon the very first seconds of it ?

As pointed out in this quote "Alive" was next on the set list when they stopped playing that tragic day.347 days: November 6, 2000 -> October 20, 2001
2000 was arguably the most difficult year in Pearl Jam’s history, and in terms of actual touring, it would be followed by the longest break in the group’s career; there would be no real tour again til 2003. As such, what a way to end it. November 6, 2000, Key Arena, Seattle, WA, sits in the pantheon of all-time Pearl Jam shows. The clear highlight of this show was the triumphant return of “Alive,” which returned after a 47-show gap, the longest in the song’s history. As the song that was next on the setlist when the Roskilde tragedy occurred, the song had been put into storage, and its emergence signaled the band turning the page; it was a cathartic moment for both band and fans perhaps unmatched in Pearl Jam’s live career

Again I was there that night, the crowed roared when they heard them (Pearl Jam) start the song. Everyone in attendance that night realized the significance.Randalls Island New York 9/29/96 - Oakland Coliseum Oakland California 11/15/97 - MSG New York New York 09/10/98 - Key Arena Seattle Washington 11/05/00, 11/06/00 - PNC Bank Arts Center Holmdel New Jersey 7/14/03 - Tweeter Center Camden New Jersey 5/28/06, MSG New York New York 06/25/08, Spectrum Arena Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 10/27/090 -
