I wonder if Mike quit. He had to train pretty seriously for the half marathon, and the way he was running laps around everyone during Spin the Black Cricle at Alpine Valley... he's gotta be in pretty good condition eh?

Mike hasn't smoked for years! Maybe 8 or 9...

In Canada, there is no smoking in most, if not all, public buildings...

Ed knows what he's doing, so leave him alone. He's not an idiot.

You can't use both fists to hold chocolate chip cookies and smoke at the same time. Hence, I'm not a smoker. Now, if I was technologically savvy I could probably create some kick ass contraption to hold the ciggy thingy for me as I fly to the heavens on waves of chocolate chip bliss. . . . but then, how would I time the eating of my cookies with the inhaling of smoke. Imagine inhaling the smoke while chewing the cookies or would it be exhaling the smoke while biting the cookies.

    OMG! I'm so confused.

I've known people who have battled smoking all their life, and just can't shake, and I've known people who finished a pack and never touched another one. Addictions suck. My dad stopped smoking when I was really young, said he accidentally relit the wrong end of a half smoked cig he had and immediately started dry heaving. Never touched another one after that.

Since this should be locked, I figured I'd speed up the process a little bit. :D

Aside from the fact that he relies on his voice to make his art, as a father of two the fact that he still smokes proves that he is not the sharpest tool in the shed. That's all I'm gonna say about it. ;)

See that's what I never understood. Why does he feel the need to perp a fraud like that? I don't think anyone really gives a shit what he drinks out of or what's in it....

I agree, it doesn't sound like something Ed would do. I hope this is not true, cause it's pretty STUPID.
Gatorade Bottles or Vitamin water bottles or whatever sports drink it may be would look perfectly fine on stage. No need to portray being a wino if you're not really a wino.

I never considered the wine bottles cool, they're only bottles after all. If he wants to look cool drinking Gatorade he could get a blinged out diamond encrusted bling bling chalice with his initials E.V. :D:D

  • i noticed that it looked as though Josh Homme offered Ed a smoke during his guest spot before Ed sang little sister with QOTSA and he turned it down.
  • He definitely had a smoke on night two. I don't think it was a full one but he took a few puffs. Then I think he threw his lighter to someone off the side back stage Stone's side.

He did seem to sound better this year and have more energy, so maybe he cut way down. He was jumping around going nuts for both shows, sounded crisp and seemed to not run out of breath at all. He must of lost a few pounds too, he was drenched with sweat both nights and if I recall correctly...it was a 2 shirt night each night.

He's a big boy, he can do what he wants. I'm sure he is well aware of the consequences.

well that started with Crazy Mary right ... a sharing with the audience... pass around

    nothing fraud about it

he must stay hydrated hence no more wine or very little while performing

In St Louie he sounded awesome better than ever ... I beg to differ that smoking is affecting his voice
but cutting back on cigs is perhaps a goal like many smokers as time goes on. This is good for all of us....
    we love him! :D

He sounds mediocre at best these days... They have to tune down a whole lot of songs now for him to even have a chance at singing them.

The only advantage to a wine bottle is that you can slosh it around without spilling more easily than you can with a Gatorade bottle. I have a buddy who sings in a band and does the same thing for that exact reason.

Not saying that's Ed's reason. I think he gradually transitioned over time to more and more Gatorade in the bottles, and now it's just a habit.

Wow, thank you so much for someone finally acknowledging this on this message board. The cigarettes have made the fast songs sound terrible, and the growl is totally gone. Nevermind the upper register where his voice constantly cracks. At some point EV's got to realize that smoking is killing his voice, because, if not, eventually he's going to be just a guitar player. It's THAT bad on the uptempo songs. After hearing how far back Cornell's voice has come since he quit smoking, it would be great if Ed followed in his footsteps. On the other hand, Bono's another inspiration and WOW have cigs destroyed that voice.

"I don't know about you, but personally, I wouldn't smoke that shit" - paraphrasing 3/2/92.

Oh, and the Gatorade in the wine bottles is flat out lame. Pure and simple.

I know it's not 1993 anymore, but I was just watching this vid earlier and thinking about how good it sounded. When it comes down to it, the differences are huge, and being that this is before he started smoking I'm willing to bet it's more than just age.

Sucks for his kids too. They're more likely to smoke is Daddy does it.

The wife and I were talking about this on the way back from PJ20. I didn't see him smoke and had hoped he quit. The low end sounds nice with that "whisky and cigarettes" voice but as said earlier the high end suffers.

In the end I hope he quits; not for us or himself but for his girls.

I take it you were not at his solo shows?

His voice is better than ever ... if he no longer can scream and abuse his voice
I for one would be ok with that ... cause that is what screaming does

I used to cringe back in the day .. thinking please be careful with that heavenly voice

times change and it's all for the better

Cornell can be the scream as he always has

Eddie will be the beautiful baritone so many love
