Pearl Jam will always be a live band first...
...and an album making band second. I love Pearl Jam on their albums and I love them live. But in my opinion Pearl Jam will ALWAYS be a live band first and foremost. It's in their nature as musicians to play amazing shows and connect with fans rather than focus entirely on the studio versions of songs (even though they do that well).

IMO they are the best live band in the world, whereas there are many bands that are putting out better albums then them. I would say that Radiohead are probably the perfect mix of being great live and in the studio (but I bet a lot of people will disagree with me about their last album).severed hand thirteen2006: Gorge 7/23 2008: Hartford 6/27 Beacon 7/1 2009: Spectrum 10/30-31

For me this was not the case in 90s, but has become the case in the 2000s. I differ from a lot people here, because for me Pearl Jam has always been more about the songs, the albums, and their meaning to me, than my live experience. I also prefer the studio versions of all the songs on the first 5 albums to almost any live version. I prefer the studio cut of RVM - always have, always will - but I think I am in the minority here on this board with this one. I grew up with Pearl Jam's studio albums Ten to Yield, and they helped me through some very difficult times. The number of times I have played each one of those albums is ridiculous - and I still play them all regularly. I got to see the band live for the first time in 2000, and have seen them 5 times in total. For me Pearl Jam has always been more about the studio albums than the live thing. This has changed for me with the Binaural and later albums, because I prefer to listen to those songs from a live performance. I think since they started putting out the official bootlegs - the importance of the studio albums to band and fans has diminished. I like to hear the live bootlegs - I think I have listened to every single official bootleg, when it came out. But I tend to only listen to each show once, maybe twice - with the exception of a small number of 'classic' shows.
What can I say? Pearl Jam have always been a studio band to me

i agree with you about the studio version of rvm and the first 5 albums. i, too, grew up on them and they got me through some shit. i didn't see them live until 96, for no code, so the later albums were much more "live" albums for me since that is what i saw live...and of course, i got the boots as well...i tended to listen to those vs. the studio ones since i had been there and wanted to relive the shows. plus, the newer stuff (2000+) just played better live imho. except for some choice riot act songs ;-)0 -
I heard their pretty good0

While I prefer most of the music live, the first 5 albums are more listenable studio versions.. not that I think any of them are unlistenable but there are songs from like Backspacer that I didn't really like until I heard it live.
*Edit* Blood is always best live though.0 -

I disagree about Radiohead being a great live band. They don't tour anymore. When they did, they were fantastic albeit predictable.
I agree 100% with the idea that PJ is fundamentally a live animal.0 -

I saw them in 2008 and they were amazing. Only second to PJ in my opinion. Since then they only have one album and they will be touring it soon.severed hand thirteen2006: Gorge 7/23 2008: Hartford 6/27 Beacon 7/1 2009: Spectrum 10/30-31

I'm sorry, I love Pearl Jam, but this statement also applies to PJ.
How can you call PJ a "live" band, when they play 10 shows a year, in the same places they always play, where the vast majority of their fan base has no way to see them? Most people live through their bootlegs, which are essentially "studio" produced recordings?
There, I've said my piece. PLAY THE SOUTH! I'll see you all tomorrow in Ottawa.Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.0 -
I can't remember the last time I put in an actual Pearl Jam album...always boots/live for me.
I like some of their stuff from Yield, Binaural, or Riot Act on the albums, but most everything else I prefer live, and honestly don't find as much attraction to the studio versions.0
