I was very impressed on how The Strokes play live. Their performance @ PJ20 was great. The bass line in Juicebo is simply amazing...
I want to download some Strokes tunes and since I don't have any Strokes album, I'm taking recommendations.

  • Is This It is worth the whole album. I'm a big Strokes fan, but if you're not looking to get into everything, here's some good ones from the other albums:
Room On Fire: What Ever Happened, Reptilia, You Talk Way Too Much, Under Control, The End Has No End
First Impressions..: You Only Live Once, Juicebox, Heart In A Cage, Ask Me Anything, Killing Lies, Ize of the World
Angles: Under Cover of Darkness, Two Kinds of Happiness, Taken For A Fool, Gratisfaction, Life Is Simple In The Moonlight

I think there's some sort of deal going now on iTunes or through the band's website, where you can get their first 3 albums (Is This It, Room On Fire, First Impressions..) as digital downloads for around 15 bucks. At 5 bucks an album, it's a great deal if you don't have any of them.

  • Gotta go w/ "Is This It?" but would recommend the international version b/c it's got the song "New York City Cops", which they played both nights at PJ20, which was pulled from the us release b/c of 9/11. But agree with everyone else start at the beginning and work your way to "Angles".

And yes they were AWESOME at PJ20, they are now a can't miss show when they come around for me.

This was the first time I had ever heard The Strokes, and I'm sorry but I completely hated them. I thought their sound was generic and the singer's voice just annoyed the piss out of me. Then when he came up with PJ and did the lines in Not For You, I thought he just completely butchered them. For me, they were the one and only crappy part of the weekend.

  • was it just me or did Jules come across as a bit of an a-hole during their performances during PJ20. His banter towards the crowd I felt was sarcastic. "Thank you for that loud applause" he said once after they finished a song.

You really can't go wrong with any of their albums, which all are good, but "Is This It?" was the best album of the year in which it came out (2001).

I'm a big Strokes fan and loved them at PJ20, but I can definitely see how someone might have gotten the impression that Julian is a bit of a jerk during the Strokes' sets and during his cameos with Pearl Jam. I don't think he actually was being a jerk. I think he was genuinely reverent towards Eddie and the band, but it came across as sarcastic because of Julian's innate detachment and irony.

definitely go with the new york city cops version.

i have seen them 5 times now and i thought they put on an excellent show for such a big place, but on stage left night 2 there were some sound issues, volume swells and cuts....not sure what that was all about, but i think that kind of pissed julien off, thus his behavior towards the band and the crowd.

  • I liked some of their songs before, but they blew me away at PJ20.

I've already downloaded both of their sets from the weekend. I'm bummed out I missed them this past summer now.

The Strokes have a big fan in me now and a big part of the reason is all the Pearl Jam love shown by Julian Casablancas. I mean, how can you not appreciate someone who loves your favorite band too? He said some funny things about his own voice and it was just fun to see how he felt when he performed with PJ. I think you could see how he felt. :)

  • I too enjoyed the Strokes, download Spotify and you can listen to any album you want
  • Totally do not and did not get them at all. But, in saying that, I respect everybody else's opinion. One thing I would think we'd all agree is how questionable it was they were the lead in band. Really? Top billing over Mudhoney? QOTSA? Interesting judgement call on that one.

Also, was something wrong with that dude's mic during Red Mosquito? Sounded like a cow moo-ing.

Edit: I say that because I thought his voice sounded normal during their set both nights.

Was I the only one who thought mudhoney spent more time creating feedback/noise than actually playing guitar? Jesus Christ, In and Out of Grace Sunday was like 25 minutes of squeeling guitars....and I love Mudhoney.

It doesn't seem all that questionable to me. They were the second-biggest act on the bill. They are the only one of the three main-stage openers with a platinum album, and their last three albums all peaked inside the top 5 on the Billboard 200. Two of QOTSA's last 3 albums hit the top 5 (the other hit No. 17), and Mudhoney has never even been inside the top 175. (One charting album peaked at No. 189 19 years ago.)
