I'm not complaining.
I'm not bitching.
Just stating opinion.

Shows were really cool with the different sets and songs played. Loved every second of Queens and Strokes. Enjoyed the hell out of traveling from DC for this experience, maybe not financially.

These shows just lacked that "umph" that MSG had or really that any great show has had.
Nothing from Vs.

10c Lawn on Sunday sucked honestly. It was so obvious that the intimacy was within the reserved seating. But everyone was friendly and I met so many people it was more of a community experience than a show experience.

PS: Night 1 might have been better after all of shit I read after the show. Not For You, Release, and Breath could have been the best versions I've ever seen. Stardog Champion and Say Hello 2 Heaven > Call Me A Dog.

When I say Vs...I mean VERSUS! Go? Animal? Blood? Leash? Indifference? Not the greatest hits songs.

  • i sort of agree, msg 2 was out there in 2010, but these pj20 shows something else, i dont think its fair to compare, two different concepts. pj20 was a celebration and as such it was awesome.

Go and Animal were released as singles and are greatest hits. RVM and Small Town weren't.

OK, I'm gonna bitch a little and I'm gonna praise a little...

Location - meh...Never got to see the museum because of constant long lines, never got a poster for either day because of constant long lines...finally got close enough to get a poster...sold out. No poster for either day for me...Not sure why production of those things wouldn't be amped up a little knowing the sheer size of the crowd coming in for that.

The setlists....were "meh" as well....Don't get me wrong, they were great setlists...But can ANYONE on this board honestly say they thought the setlists would:
    1. Be that short...they essentially played "normal" shows.
    2. That it would really take Chris Cornell showing up to justify the "awesomeness" of this weekend?

Remove the "PJ20" from those setlists...great setlists...and I rocked out both nights and had a blast...

I can probably name 5-10 normal shows that have better setlists than the 2 nights at Alpine...The weekends "awesomeness" seemed to stem from a couple of guests on stage and Chris Cornell showing up...

My buddies and I were talking on the way up and we set the over/under on total songs played for the weekend would be 75...There were 61 played INCLUDING the Temple of The Dog songs..and repeating Hunger Strike and Reach Down was "iffy" for me as well..Cornell on night 1...= AWESOME...But for me and my crew and everyone around me, Cornell on night 2 was a bit of an overkill...

Its not Pearl Jam's fault that rumors floated that Neil Young was heavily rumored to be there on Sunday...but for most of the people I spoke to, it did put a big "let down" factor on the second night to get Cornell again and for Temple of The Dog to only play 2 new songs...

Personally...Their performance at Bonnaroo 2008 was still the best show of theirs I've been to...this weekend was amazing, and I don't regret for ONE SECOND going...but considering the circumstances and the fact it was the 20th Anniversary...I give the overall weekend a B+....

I believe RVM and Small Town were on the greatest hits cd? I guess I meant the hard pure PJ songs.

I completely agree with everything you said.

It did take Cornell to make the show special, and the museum and poster comments were spot on. I went through the same bs.

But when you do think about it and sit down, we did just see Cornell cover MLB and play TOTD songs WITH TOTD (even if Cornell played those songs on his solo tour ;) )

That said though, this was more of the PJ community experience. There seemed to be a very distinct line between 10c member and the "elderly woman ledbetter fan"

  • While I think thats an awesome statement considering I was at MSG night 2 and it was hands down the greatest concert experience of my life, I would EASILY trade that show for the weekend at alpine valley for PJ20.

I Know I wasn't there but I honestly don't understand how people are complaining about "too many guests". Are you serious? I wasn't even there and I "get" the point of the festival. It was to celebrate PJ's history. Having the opening acts join PJ on stage and having PJ members join the opening acts on stage was all about the bands having fun together and celebrating that with each other. From Liam Finn covering Habit, to him joining the band on stage for habit, from having josh homme join during in the moonlight, eddie singing together with another opening act, Mike joining yet another opening act on stage, chris cornell joining PJ for the TOTD reunion, all of the celebrities that came to see the show, it all showed they were having a great time and seeing that makes the festival soooo much better. It shows everyone was there for one thing, pearl jam.

Yet thats somehow a bad thing....

Liam on Habit and Julian on Not For You were SOOOO good.

Julian was great both nights...he had me cracking up..

but I have a bone to pick with them as well...lol...they repeated almost their setlist on Sunday...even having Ed join them for "Juicebox"...I don't get that. Those bands have to know that probably 98% of the crowd they are playing to on night 2 is the same crowd they played to on night 1...so I don't get The Strokes repeating...almost their entire setlist...Because they were a BIG, BIG plus for me going into this weekend...so they were a little bit of a downer as well.

I've been thinking about this too and I think MSG 2 2010 ranks slightly higher than PJ20 for me. I don't think it's a fair comparison, though, expectations were so much higher for PJ20, and I think nothing beats being able to walk home after a show. I literally thought Pearl Jam was going to break up after MSG 2 and that was their farewell show because there were so many points during that show that I thought it couldn't get any better, and it did. I also had a mental list of songs I was disappointed weren't played during MSG 1, and they whipped all those out, and more! I mean, Hunger Strike? I was totally not expecting that at MSG!

If I had been to PJ20 before MSG 2, it may very well have been reversed so maybe these were both just simply amazing and it's just that the one that came first will always be the better one.

There is a possibility that the strange dude next to me plus the number of people that just kept shuttling back and forth for beer may have taken away from PJ20 night 2. Far more shifting around than night 1 to let people through and definitely much more than any of the MSG shows I've been to. I just don't get it. I would not miss a second of a Pearl Jam show but I guess to each their own.

Having said all that, I would not have traded one for the other and I am so thankful I was at both!

  • The way some of you people are posting seems like maybe you need to stop attending so many shows. This was my 11th and 12th shows and I was blown away both nights.

The negative comments and general snottiness of some people on this board really makes me question the kind of people that are 'huge fans' of this band. It's almost as if they are 'collecting' certain shows and then bragging about it to try and trump someone else. It's ridiculous if you ask me.

I can't believe new members even stick around on this board. I've lurked for many years and never post because of talk like this.

bottom line...This was a fantastic weekend with fantastic bands celebrating 20 years of the best band on the planet.

I totally agree that my post makes me seem a bit snotty...I get that...

It had nothing to do with the band for why some (me included) feel a little let down by this weekend...that feeling is all on us...its not the bands responsibility to set our level of expectations...HOWEVER...I think any normal fan of this band would have considered this weekend to be THE PERFECT PLACE and THE PERFECT TIME for the band to put on their most epic of epic shows in celebration of their 20th Anniversary...and for me that didn't happen. I'm never disappointed after attending any Pearl Jam show...but based on where my level of expectations were because I ASSUMED (which is my fault) that this would be the show that tops all other shows, and that they would treat it as such and that simply was NOT the case...the band put on an epic two day performance propped up by ONE huge guest appearance...

Was the setlist selection questionable? Yes, I think so...I mean logically looking at it, I thought...If I don't get Tremor Christ, Fatal, Footsteps, I Got Shit etc..at PJ20....I'm not going to get to hear them...I did get to cross off a number of songs that I love and hadn't seen live before...Nothingman, Leatherman, Satan's Bed, Red Mosquito, Habit, Kick Out The Jams...so that's nice...but again...its my fault as a fan for setting the level of expectations too high...but its not my fault for assuming that this concert would be the opportunity for the band to top all of their other "normal" shows as this was a special occasion and the perfect opportunity for the band to put on a performance to top all others...and by what's been said on a number of threads they simply did not do that...they put on a great show...just not the most epic show that most anticipated they would.

Glad someone agrees with me....there was a vibe (I hate to overuse a term like that, but here - it works perfectly) and a just presence in the air that night and it was ELECTRIC...If the whole Kanye fiasco hadn't happened and forced them off stage I think they would have played 40 songs or more...they were just rocking that night...hearing "release" late in the setlist like that...it was just an epic, epic performance that night...I came away 100% blown away that night...

The AV shows were both great shows... I went in with low expectations (mostly due to the way the schedule was setup), and my only complaint was the ToTD was just too much both nights (I love ToTD, but to take over the encore cost us some really amazing songs that were left on the setlist due to time like All Those Yesterdays, I Got Shit, Crown of Thorns, etc)...

Comparing them to other shows is tough. My favorite shows are still going to be the Philly shows, but AV 1 had that feel of 'anything can happen' which was awesome. Had they played the songs left off the setlist that would probably be a top 3 show for me because the 4-5 they left off were all huge favs of mine...

The second show was going great until CC came on and wouldn't leave, but it was still a monster show. A long show with lots of energy. Not as many surprises, but they were still there (Love Boat Captain, No Way, Wash).

It all comes down to personal preference... and we can't compare all shows to Philly 4 - I think this weekend proves they truly are not going to play that long ever again. :)
  • Everyone needs to relax, it's just a rock band, i was a big pearl jam fan from my early 20s onward...but to be honest I really haven't listened to the band or any of their live shit in a long time because there is a lot of better and more innovative music out there that excites me more...so I really had no desire to go....I have been to a couple historic PJ concerts and they are great, but part of the reason they were great is because they were unexpected....aka State College 2003...nobody thought they would play that long....but lately it seems like the band is trying to suck every fucking nickel out of us....with the increase in 10club fees and not receiving the xmas single, lame reissues, 30 some dollars for posters at the Spectrum shows...and all these books and stuff that are often made with low quality materials and will end up with the junk.......also unless you joined the 10club before 1996 your seats arent going to be that great, unless you win the lottery. I am not even excited for a new Pearl Jam album if one comes out after how bad the past 3 have been....can these guys bust out a good album again and give us something fresh, instead of the same predictable shitty mid tempo rock songs, we dont need eddie to sing about how he can count on both hands about people he loves, the anti war shit is old....give us something to get excited about....please pearl jam. They have become a stadium rock band that is mostly living off of good songs they wrote 15-20 years ago.

perfectly said... i would also add if Cornell really needed to play 8 songs he should have just been an opening act
