On Sept. 5, 1993, at The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, WA: I was sweating, bruised and sunburned in the dusty mosh pit at what remains my favorite, most life-altering Pearl Jam show ever. They were on the same bill as Neil Young and Blind Melon. They were the biggest band in the world, just a few weeks from the release of "VS," trying out their new stuff. I was a much younger man, four days from leaving for graduate school in Ireland with my pregnant wife. Their first show at The Gorge. "Nice place," Eddie said, before launching into "Animal." Unforgettable.
Was anybody else there?

It sold out minutes after tickets went on sale. But I was pretty close, and my body paid for it.Post edited by bicyclejoe onMy Pearl Jam Road: 10/22/90 Seattle | 12/22/90 Seattle, Moore Theater | 9/29/92 Seattle, Magnusson Park, Drop in the Park | 9/5/93 The Gorge, with Neil Young and Blind Melon | 7/20/06 Portland, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall with Sleater-Kinney | 7/22/06 The Gorge, 10/21/06 Mountain View, Shoreline Ampitheatre, Bridge School Benefit | 9/21/09 Seattle | 9/22/09 Seattle | 9/26/09 Portland, OR | 7/14/2011 Eddie Vedder, Portland, OR | 11/29/13 Portland, OR0 -
You can get a pretty good idea of what the pit was like from this video (Eddie actually goes after a security guard or audience member and spits at them at 2:08).

My friend was going to see Eddie last night. Since he was in Vegas, I gave him 5 Grand to gamble with. I told him I wanted it all to go on Black. Bastard! PhillyCrownOfThorns-11-2-120 -
And with Mark Arm on Sonic Reducer after the sun set (look at all the dust swirling in the lights):

pjtradeking, I had already seen them a few times and was a fan, but I hadn't thought of them as a great live band. Good, but not great.
But when Eddie sang "Black" with the setting sun behind him, that was the moment everything changed. That was the moment they became my favorite band.
Let's watch the video replay (notice how the sun disappears and the sky turns black during the song -- it's daylight at the beginning, night at the end):

And then I went nuts, crowd-surfing during Porch (You can see me land in front of Eddie right before he shouts "No Time Like the Present":

Of course, my favorite version of "Daughter" is the first time I heard it that night, when Eddie sang part of "Tonight's The Night" at the end:

These videos are great! I was only 13/14 back then and no where near Seattle, but I do remember being mad at parents for not letting me see them at that age when they toured...guess I can understand why they didn't think it would be "safe" for me to go now that I am older0

I was there. I was down there in the "golden circle" I think it was called. One of my favorite shows ever. Gorge is much different now.Slipped on a curb in the road.0
