Can someone please confirm if Alpine Valley really is a 'dead zone' for cell phone coverage. If so, what carriers are affected? Hopefully, AT&T has at least marginal coverage.

Thanks

I just asked my friend about cell service at Alpine. I haven't been there since 2007 but he was just there on 6/25 for Buffett:

"it was spotty, hit and miss at times. definitely was able to get texts out and in to/from _________, but sometimes took a while. did not try calling anyone, so don't know about that. there was service. i wouldn't want to count on it for my life, but there is service. sometimes its flawless, sometimes takes a couple mins is all. oh, i also recall it being better this summer than it was the year before."

i'm guessing on a normal day, it's not bad, but when they dump 30K+ cell phones into a rural area, it's not going to be so good.

maybe instead of charging stations, they need to install wifi stations.

I think either of those two ideas are ridiculous. We should be there to enjoy the music, nature, and each other. Can't you people leave your devices alone for a few hours and enjoy life and the experience?

But how will people check in on Facebook?

    Not THIS discussion again!
Sure, texting / making calls for the fun of it / holding your phone in the air and annoying others so can shoot a piss-poor video should not be done.

BUT... Lots of concert-goers may be leaving children behind and need to be reachable for emergencies.

And YES people managed to go to concerts before cell phones were invented.

But now, people who would not go somewhere like this BECAUSE they could not be reached, can go.

What is so difficult to understand about this.

I want to go out and enjoy stuff like this, I cannot be totally unreachable for long periods of time if the caregiver of my children needs me for something...

We don't need cell phones at concerts.

    Nope.

I have a two-year-old and a four-year-old that will be staying at home with my mom, one of which has had three seizures since November.

So no, I cannot just leave my device alone. I will enjoy the experience more knowing that my bebes are okay :)

If it were up to me, you'd be leaving your cell phone in your horse and buggy ;)

  • i was there for a very large concert last summer. i use AT&T and coverage was next to non-existent. you might be able to get a few phone calls out at best or maybe have spotty SMS (text) service if you're lucky. overall expect AT&T coverage to be painfully slow or completely down most of the time. i cannot speak for verizon though and it is typically much better from what i've heard.

if you put more than 30 people anywhere in a field at any given point in time AT&T service will fail.

I must be within a coverage area at all times. You never know when there might be a kibble recall, hurt feelings over who gets the last Milk Bone, or an outbreak of Mad Labrador Retriever Disease in my neighborhood.

I carry a lot of responsibilty, people.

Someone I work with told me that the AT&T coverage was pretty good up there. I've heard the opposite from others I know. The AT&T map has it shown as "Best".
