Jesus, the Pirates spent $17 million on the draft. That's insane.

8M for the pitchers and 5M for the other guy. yikes.

seems like they are really trying to build a winner (finally)
81 is now off the air

Yeah, man. That $5 mil is more than double what anyone outside the first round has ever gotten. The draft is obviously important for a team like that. Good to see them making it a priority.

the draft is a crapshoot ... especially when it comes to pitchers ...

but it's pretty obvious if you want to compete against the big market teams - you have to build your farm system ... and hope to do it in house ...

I thought this was an excellent read about Thome, his home runs, and his ability to get on base. Author calls him a Picasso for learning the art of obtaining a walk to get on base.

This article also touches on home-run hitters in general -- good read..

I am unfamiliar with his name, but have probably read stuff by him. I like the way he gets you right in the story. I'll have to keep my eye out now that I know who he is.

He's great. Definitely check him out. Everything he writes is really long but great. Definitely the best sports writer out there. Wrote for the Kansas City Star for a long time and now writes for SI.

    Here's his blog

And his archives. Dig through that for a while, ha, will take you days.

i like thome but i don't think he is a first ballot HOF ... i mean ... if it wasn't for the DH - he doesn't come close to 600 hrs ...

    What? Seriously?

    Avg OBP Slg OPS
    Reggie Jackson 0.262 0.356 0.490 0.846
    Jim Thome 0.277 0.403 0.558 0.961

Edit: That did not come out right, but you get the point.

Yeah, I hear you on the titles, but that is not just his doing, he was on some great teams. I am not terrible concerned with the dh aspect, hes only been a DH for the past 5 years or so, right? I feel like anyone who hits 600 home runs and plays to a .403 OBP over 21 years, is a first ballot HOF
