I never heard of Glen before seeing him in Philly. I've since bought "The Swell Season" and am enjoying the hell out of it!!!
Anyone who says they are a "Swell Season" fan needs to check out Glen's real band, The Frames. Swell Season is good, but The Frames are on an entirely different level and vastly better and more diverse.
I would suggest starting with their album "For the Birds" or their live album "Setlist" and after you fall in love, buy the rest....
Thinking you are a Glen fan but only listening to Swell Season and not The Frames would be like only listening to Paul McCartney when he was with the band Wings and ignoring his work with the Beatles.0 -
The Frames "Setlist" is definitely a must listen to if you haven't heard it yet! SO amazing live.0

review of Ed's solo show that mentions Hansard:

"This concert review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Glen Hansard further. Eddie must have balls the size of garbage cans to let that guy open for him. That gypsy can steal your woman and walk off with your crowd by the bridge of the second song. Hansard could do no wrong. In front of that crowd - with that voice, that accent, and that kind of (sometimes) violent approach to acoustic guitar - he was fishing with dynamite. I went out and bought the Once soundtrack – as just a place to start. Hats off."San Jose 10/93, San Francisco 6/95, San Jose 11/95, St Louis 4/03, Columbus 5/10, MSGII 5/21/2010, Alpine Valley 09/03/2011 and 09/04/20110 -
I'm a fan of this thread - there can't be enough love for Glen!
Oh and thanks for the heads up re the portrait - I'm gonna check that out

Loved seeing Glen in Seattle (night 1). Was really impressed with his stuff, and then when he finished with Astral Weeks all the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. Van is my favourite singer behind Vedder, and it was great to hear someone do proper justice to one of his most intense songs. My opinion of GH went very high during that concert - the completely unplugged duet was fer-fucking-nomenal, as was Falling Slowly - definitely two of the highlights of Eddie's set. My opinion of Glen went higher still when I read this on his Wikipedia page:Hansard has remarked about his musical influences: "In my house, when I was a kid, there was the holy trinity, which was Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan with Bob sitting center."
I will certainly be looking out for more from him, as someone who seems qualified to carry on the traditions of three of my favourite artists - EV, Dylan and Van M.Cancel my subscription to the Ressurection

Glen is indeed most excellent. Whether he is the man yet - You'll have to ask the original, Van the Man Morrison whether he's prepared to surrender his titleCancel my subscription to the Ressurection
