Anders Behring Breivik Identified As Suspect In Norway Shooting

The 32-year-old Norwegian man who allegedly went on a shooting spree on the island of Utoya has been identified as Anders Behring Breivik, according to multiple reports.

The Daily Mail and Sky News were among those to report the suspect's name. According to witnesses, the gunman was dressed as a police officer and gunned down young people as they ran for their lives at a youth camp.

Police said Friday evening that they've linked the youth camp shooting and Oslo bombing. Breivik is believed to have acted alone.

Norwegian TV2 reports that Breivik belongs to "right-wing circles" in Oslo. Swedish news site Expressen adds that he has been known to write to right-wing forums in Norway, is a self-described nationalist and has also written a number of posts critical of Islam.

A Twitter account for Breivik has surfaced, though it only has one post, this quote from philosopher John Stuart Mill: "One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100 000 who have only interests." The tweet was posted on July 17.

On a Facebook account that Norwegian media outlets have attributed to Breivik, he describes himself as having Christian, conservative views. He says he enjoys hunting, the games World of Warcraft and Modern Warfare 2, and lives in Oslo. He also lists political analysis and stock analysis as interests.

Possibly the Bahder-Meinhof gang in West Germany in the 1970's, although their targets were more selctive, as opposed to wiping out scores of schoolchildren.

Even if you make all guns illegal, try telling me you couldn't get one if you really needed one. Look at drugs. Now not only do you have an underground dangerous market for selling them, but the people who plan to use them to do no good getting them anyways. :?

It would still be more difficult to get hold of one, thereby reducing the chances of such large massacres occuring.

Though I don't know what gun laws/restrictions are like in Norway.
It would reduce crimes of passion, like an O.J. Simpson type murder, but this would not have been prevented. He planned this out. The gun he used is illegal in Norway as all automatic weapons owned by civilians are.

He is a terrorist. Making guns illegal is not going to stop the war on terror.

At least 87 are dead now from the shooter. How did he take that many out without being stopped? Something is missing here.

But apparently it's not guns that kill people, it's people that kill people!

I wonder whether he'd have been able to kill so many people armed with just a knife?

sure you could it would just take longer.
and by the way the I believe the bomb was made with fertelizer so lets outlaw cow's also

When has anyone ever killed 91 people with a knife?

    Answer: never.

It's practically impossible, unless they're all cripples in wheelchairs, or you drug them all first. Only possession of an automatic weapon would allow you to kill that many people before being apprehended.

The gun he used was illegal. He killed 91 with an automatic weapon, which is outlawed in Norway. Gun laws wouldn't have made a difference with this story. End of argument.

I don't think it was outrageous to suspect Muslim terrorists at first, when all we heard was that the Prime Minster's office had been bombed. Turns out it was a psycho killer with a different fundamentalist cause.

I was in Norway just this past May, for 10 days. It is truly an example of how well socialism can work. There was some discussion, however, of how many immigrants they have allowed into their country, and how well they are integrating. My family was concerned that the right-wing party would take control mainly due to that issue, that there would be a backlash against the current immigration policy. I guess I'm not surprised that some nutter took matters into his own hands. However, I'm shocked that he would open fire on a youth camp. My whole family over there is in shock. Norway will never again be the same, they are telling me. :(

I agree, I'll admit I felt very ignorant when I assumed it was al-quaeda linked (not muslim specific, though, I assumed it was 'terrorist' linked) ...I was surprised when I found out it was some Norwegian guy from a well off family.

My heart and thoughts go out to your family and hte entire country. Something like this would seriously be detrimental to the psyche of a nation. :(:(

I don't think anyone should be ashamed if they thought it was Al-Qaeda or some other Islamist group, I mean look at their fucking track record. That's not being ignorant. I'm just sick of being in the middle of a conflict between religious terrorists. The world will be better off without religion. Who knows how or if we'll ever get to that kind of world.
