What are z's? (drugs?)

My stepdaughter saw a text on her dad's phone talking about z's. I can't find much about them except for the wiki entry.

Sounds like a controlled substance but I can't tell how "bad" a drug it is or if it's really slang for something else more common.

Anyone have any ideas?

    Z's are prescription sleep aids. The over the counter names you might recognize are ambien and lunesta. They effects and addictive qualities are similar to benzodiazepines such as xanax, valium,ativan etc, but chemically they are different.

    So are people buying them on the street for rec uses and if so why would you want to fall alseep so much? Maybe I'm not understanding the process and effect like I should. If you alter the consumption method/frequency/etc. do they quit acting as sleep aids?

    I.e. do large doses alter the properties?

    They are sedatives and have some hallucinogenic qualities to them. People use them to get high. Another major use for them, especially on the street, is to come down off of a speed/meth high.

    ...and yes, alter the doses alters the effects. As does injecting or inhaling, which is pretty common.

    I think it is marijuana....is the step dad older, like 48 or so? I remember hearing my neighbor say that in the late 1970's.
    he used it for ounce of pot...the abbreviation for ounce = oz.

    as in, picking up a z today

    Now I could be wrong... But some footballers here got in trouble for mixing sleeping pills with red bull.... Had an affect like some sort of drugs and it is not subject to anti-doping laws...
