"As announced on Sunday, June 05, 2011, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is moving its rotating strike to Montreal, Quebec following the 48-hour strike for Hamilton, Ontario postal workers. Postal workers in Montreal will hit the picket lines at 11:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, June 05, 2011. The CUPW National Executive Board will select future locations for strike activity based on developments at the bargaining table. DHL Global Mail is continuing to pick-up and process mail and parcels to Canada as normal, however delays are expected as a result of the work disruption in those areas where strike activities are present. We are reviewing alternate solutions, in the event the strike continues for a prolonged amount of time and/or grows to a regional or national level. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates, including strike locations, as they develop."
10c will continue to process and ship orders to Canada as long as DHL Globalmail continues to process deliveries to Canada.

I'm hoping Can Post strikes themselves out of their usefulness! It's a great time for Canadians to move all their banking and utilities to paperless e-bills.
Oh, and don't forget, if you live in BC to vote to keep the HST! Conservatives have promised to lower it to 10% within 2 years, which is a helluva lot better than being stuck with the permanent 12% GST + PST."If you are flammable and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit." - Mitch Hedberg0 -

After days of rotating strikes by postal workers, Canada Post has suspended operations across the country.
"The accelerating decline in volumes and revenue combined with the inability to deliver mail on a timely and safe basis has left the company with no choice but to make this decision," the Crown corporation said in a statement late Tuesday night.
"We believe that a lockout is the best way to bring a timely resolution to this impasse and force the union to seriously consider proposals that address the declining mail volumes and the $3.2-billion pension deficit."

Those Ed goodies that shipped out day's ago will hopefully get here before the Montreal show this September, right?

Canada Post locks out workers
Rotating strikes put corporation's viability in jeopardy, it says

After days of rotating strikes by postal workers, Canada Post has suspended operations across the country.
"The accelerating decline in volumes and revenue combined with the inability to deliver mail on a timely and safe basis has left the company with no choice but to make this decision," the Crown corporation said in a statement late Tuesday night.
"We believe that a lockout is the best way to bring a timely resolution to this impasse and force the union to seriously consider proposals that address the declining mail volumes and the $3.2-billion pension deficit."
Canada Post says that the rotating strikes had caused losses approaching $100 million as of Tuesday's strike in Toronto and Montreal and that the figure was climbing daily.
The corporation also cites "several incidents" that led to concerns about moving the mail while keeping employees and customers safe.
"Canada Post and CUPW remain far apart on several fundamental issues and there has been no progress made at the negotiating table for weeks," the corporation says in its statement.
"If we allow the uncertainty created by the rotating strikes to continue, our ability to remain financially self-sufficient and not become a burden on Canadian taxpayers will be in jeopardy."0 -

Back-to-work law for Canada Post tabled
CTV.ca News Staff
Date: Mon. Jun. 20 2011 4:39 PM ET
The federal government tabled back-to-work legislation Monday afternoon to end the Canada Post lockout.
Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt introduced the bill in the House of Commons after the daily question period.
However, the two sides are now talking after an unproductive weekend failed to make any progress towards ending the lockout. Last week Canada Post suspended urban operations after nearly two weeks of rotating strikes by workers.
Raitt said the two sides have had more than enough time to come to a deal.
"It is both parties at the table who are negotiating and have been unable to obtain an agreement," she said.
"That's why we are acting on behalf of Canadians, on behalf of small businesses, on behalf of charities who are being affected by this work stoppage across the country."
Speaking to reporters after tabling the bill, Raitt said the work stoppage has hurt the economy.
"We're here to put people back to work," she said. "We're acting on the interest of Canadians and the national economy."
The back-to-work legislation would bring the two sides before an arbitrator with their best offer. The arbitrator will pick one of the two offers.
Raitt said the risk of getting a worse deal from binding arbitration instead of a negotiated settlement is "the danger of asking Parliament to settle your dispute."
Raitt said she is open to facilitating negotiations between Canada Post and the union.
Earlier, Jon Hamilton, spokesperson for Canada Post, said the Crown corporation is still hoping to negotiate a settlement with the union before the government steps in.
However the two sides have failed to gain any ground in recent negotiations, and scheduled face-to-face talks failed to materialize on Sunday.
The New Democrats have signalled their intention to vote against the back-to-work bill, though they will be unable to stop the majority Conservatives from passing the legislation.
Raitt tabled similar legislation last week that would have forced striking Air Canada employees back to work, but the two sides worked out a last-minute agreement before the law took effect.
If legislation is passed before Canada Post and the union make a deal, employees would return to work and an arbitrator would have 90 days to study the proposals made by both sides before coming up with a final settlement.
Denis Lemelin, national president of the 48,000-member union, said on Sunday he was bracing for a federal order to return to work.
"We expect the government will put forward something," he said. "It's like the real negotiation between Canada Post and the union is finished."
Postal workers had been staging rotating strikes across the country since June 3 before they were locked-out.
Raitt had repeatedly signalled her intention to introduce legislation sometime this week since all urban postal operations were suspended last Wednesday.
The Crown corporation has said the main sticking point in the dispute is the union's demand for staffing levels beyond the capability of Canada Post, adding that wages were not the key disagreement.
The union has been emphasizing working conditions and safety issues, as well as arguing that new employees would receive inferior wages and pensions.0 -
Following the passage of back to work legislation, Canada Post has announced that operations will resume on Monday, June 27, 2011. As a result of the almost two week work stoppage, Canada Post has advised that it will naturally take time to sort and distribute the high volume of unprocessed and accumulated mail within Canada and from other countries, including the United States, that has not yet entered the Canada Post mail stream. Canadian consumers and business can expect to start receiving mail again on Tuesday, June 28, 2011.0
