Its very difficult to do. You need to know where, how, and when. You need tons of patience. This usually takes years of experience to be successful. Thats why i leave it to the "professionals", the guys who go after celebrity autographs for a living (and no, I'm not one of them). I just figured that the chances of me meeting the band in person and getting all of them to sign a album or poster are vitually nill, so i dont mind paying a pretty penny for authentic, signed memorabilia from my favorite band. The best way to know it is authentic is if its been authenticated by the worlds leading 3rd party authenticators, PSA/DNA. I have about 4 full band signed items from PJ, all PSA/DNA authenticated, like the poster in my profile pic. Got all of them off Ebay. Thats where I'd suggest looking.........

I would not go with psa or anything else they have been known to pass fakes many times. The only way to get them is ur self i have been collecting autos for 20 years and now the market is flooded with them i only collect dont sell. Lot of times i give them to people i have giving several miek autos away on here in fact.

So what you're suggesting is that the only way a person should try to get a PJ autograph is "in person". I agree that idealy that would be the best way. Easier said than done. Impossible for 99% of PJ fans. For those that would like an authentic signed PJ item, PSA/DNA is the only way to go. They didnt become the industry leader by chance. I'm not gonna say they are correct 100% percent of the time, i'll bet it's damn close though. But having their certification on your item is a hell of alot better than just someones word that its real......

I'm not into autographs but I see nothing wrong with asking them for one while at a show, if you happen to run into them.

Knocking on their door at home and asking for one, now that is an invasion of their privacy.

In all seriousness, I hear that Mike likes coffee shops. If I know Pearl Jam, they'd probably avoid places like Starbucks and go hit up a local place.

PJ does NOT do COAs or anything like that. Heard it from a credible source (straight from his mouth).

I used to go autograph hunting, and was really turned off when my friend was dragging me all over the place, talking to roadies, bus drivers, then hunting down the poor guy who just wants to buy a record, or get a bite to eat etc.

I see both sides of the autograph collecting, but I'd rather get a hug/handshake and maybe a pic with a band member. A 'doodle' would be worth even more to me.

The only way I really want to 'buy' their autographs, is by winning a charity auction, or buying a poster for charity.

Thanks for all the advise peeps! The reason why this came up is because I met U2 last week here in Winnipeg it took 3 days and 25 hours of waiting to meet them all and i only got adam's and Bono's autograph, still was a great pleasure even if i'm waiting out in the rain.

I would feel like an absolute tool as a guy asking for an autograph as an adult. That's something for women(because they have crushes) and for kids under 16.

There is an exception to this rule however. Seeing them at a side project venue where it is much more laid back and calm when it's you and maybe like 5 other people and they sign a CD or a sticker for you as you talk to them. I would just feel weird at a PJ show, that's just my opinion.

That's awesome. Was that when they were going to that theater to shoot the documentary for "Achtung Baby"?

So you're contradicting yourself a bit here. Your first statement is completely asinine, as many adults, including the guys in Pearl Jam (most notably Mike) have made it known of seeking autographs of those they admire.

Saying that there is a proper time and place to do this is a much more valid point, though it shouldn't feel "weird" at a PJ show since that's the only time you would have all your eggs in one basket. However I doubt anyone has successfully scored the full band's autographs after a show since, oh, i dunno... 1992? I hope I'm wrong but I can't see them all making themselves accessible on purpose out by the buses like smaller bands. I mean I've got autographs from bands on the level of Wilco and Flaming Lips like that because they always come out, but PJ is on a whole different level.

I'm not contradicting myself at all. When we met Mike at the Tres Mts show he actually asked if we had anything we wanted signed. When there are hundreds of people waiting for them it just becomes a hassle.

    2 completely different scenarios.

Your statement that "I would feel like an absolute tool as a guy asking for an autograph as an adult. That's something for women(because they have crushes) and for kids under 16." comes across as a blanket statement regarding autographs in general. If the last line of your post "I would just feel weird at a PJ show, that's just my opinion." is supposed to tie in with the first paragraph then so be it. But in no way is that clear.

It's pretty clear to me. If you are an adult male, waiting outside of a Pearl Jam show looking to score an autograph is pretty lame. Do you have any idea how ridiculous that looks.

At Tres Mts. My wife had a "Team McCready" sticker he signed for her and he gave her a pick. I didn't even ask for anything there, but he was offering so as a guy if you a CD or something that would be acceptable. Otherwise you look like a tool waving a sharpie and a record in their face.

  • Well of course it's clear to you since you wrote it. ;)

But you're entitled to your opinion and I'm certainly not arguing. You are in the minority however because whether it be musicians, athletes, or actors there are plenty of men and women of all ages that seek out autographs. It's less invasive than asking for a picture and is a nice memento to document that moment. Again it's fine that you have no interest in that but don't make it out like the other 95-99% are all tools.

Also, if it's a bus situation, they are fully aware of why people are out there to begin with. Do you think they are looking for serious conversation? They know that fans are wanting pictures and autographs and if they're up for it they come over.

I went to a Flaming Lips show last month where Sean Lennon's band was opening up. One of the guys that went with me is a crazy Beatle fan and thought that getting an autograph from anyone in the the Lennon bloodline was the most important thing in the world. It was obnoxious as he didn't come out for at least two hours afterward. It sucked because that put us at getting home around 4:30 AM and the other guy we were with had to be at work at 7:30. I don't know what my point is other than when he did finally come by, he was super nice and seemed genuinely appreciative of us hanging around for as long as we did. While if I had been by myself I would have never done that, I now really like having my copy of the blue vinyl that was limited to 500 copies signed by him and his girlfriend (they make up the band). Even though I wouldn't have forgotten the concert in general, having that is a vivid reminder of what we put ourselves through.

i'm not an autograph seeker, but would be thrilled to bump into the boys before or after a show, get a quick cell phone pic or something.

anyway, my dad used to work at JFK and he got an autograph and airplane doodle from ed after he flew in from italy....then my mom threw it away a couple years later because she had no idea what it was.
