Concern after last Binaural Show?

Just listened to the last show of the Binaural tour in Seattle. Ed made numerous mentions that "This is it" "Goodbye" "we are done" type talk like it was their last show. I've been to multiple tour ending shows, and listened to may others but never heard that many, or that many focused goodbyes...
So my question, was the general fanbase concerned after that show was over? Looking for some info from some people who were active then?

The band also didn't play Alive on that entire American tour until that very last show in Seattle.
Spring 1994 after Cobain's death, fame, the tension between Ed and Dave A. (who I stil believe was in the wrong place at the wrong time with Ed and his attitude). Mike's drug and alcohol problems were also hurting the band.
Spring of 96 while making No Code I've read Jeff walked out on the band for a while because material he thought was being recorded wasn't.
Fall of 2000 After the long Binaural tour and death of the fans. Ed's marriage falling apart didn't help much either.
Out of all the times I've read about, I think the band was probably closest to breaking up in 1994. Listening to some of the March and April 94 shows from the Vs. tour it sounds like the band is not holding back at all...Ed's vocals expecially.

I was active on the boards during that time, and what I remember most was absolutely nothing during that period was taken for granted. We just took each day at a time, and hoped that the band would feel able to continue.

WILSON: I saw them in Seattle, the last show of their whole [Binaural] tour. It was incredible. All these incredible versions, different versions of songs, different grooves on songs, big long jams. Pretty much every person during the whole show sang every lyric to every song. And every time Eddie would glance over or look over to our section, every arm went up. Afterwards, I went backstage and Eddie came up to me and was having a million feelings you could tell, cause it was the end of the whole tour, the 'life and death tour.' I said, "I just got so emotional during your show. That was maybe the best show I've ever seen." I saw tears come into his eyes and he was like, "Yeah, I know," and gave me this big hug. It meant so much to him that the night was so good.
And I remember in either '09 or '10 at one of their European shows Ed made some comment that several websites were actually reporting on as the "break up of Pearl Jam". But that one seemed pretty silly to me, because when I read the story the quote seemed innocent.
In all honesty, for the last 10 years I have been living under the assumption that the most recent album was their last album. Then they would announce a return to the studio and I would think, "hope they make it good, because it's probably the last". I never dreamed they would carry on this long.
