    To be, we are far past the time when grunge and that type of musi were popular and everywhere. I'm sure they listen to top 40 radio stations and what not and they'll never hear pearl jam on there. Not necessarily their fault.

    There are a lot of things I think are "wrong" with the youth of today. Whether or not they know who Eddie Vedder is does not top my list.

    I think what's also different is 20 years ago there were fewer "gatekeepers" of music, i.e. media outlets that exposed people to music. We had mtv, radio, maybe an independent periodical, and trusted music buddies. We were also much more passive respondents in a way, too. Now, think of all the myriad of ways there is too access music, hear artists (new or old), and how many options you have to find out about who is "good" and "cool".

    so back to the initial question: What is wrong with the youth of today? completely uncultured?

    Simple answer is this

    EV doesn't have his own reality show. Because in todays eye you haven't made it till Bravo, VH1, MTV, E! or any of the other "reality" (and i use the word reality loosely) networks gives you a show to show the world how much more awesome your life is. Plus MTV no longer plays music nor do they even report about music news on the air.

    PJ and EV get little airplay on the radio and lets be honest classic rock stations are playing more PJ than rock stations. Also EV/PJ doesn't have an offical twitter sight which who can blame them. "Can't fucking twitter...Hate that shit" EV Columbus OH 6 May 2010

    QFM 96 in Columbus Plays PJ songs from Ten, VS and Vitalogy they also play stuff from STP core and purple and i have heard one hit wonder songs from the height of grunge.

    I feel i should use the word Whippersnaper more and yelling at kids to GET OFF MY LAWN YOU HOOLIGANS

    So, speaking as an old lady with kids, I would say that it is a question of education and exposure as much as age. When I was a kid, I was very familiar with music from the 60's and I abhorred disco and the pop music that followed it (Sheen Easton, anyone??).

    My kids do not really listen to the radio unless I put on WRXP when we are in the car. They hear a lot of PJ, but they also hear jazz, reggae, and lots of classical music. My younger son is twelve; he also is a pretty serious musician. He likes Radiohead, Band of Horses, Mumford & Sons -- along with Mahler, Ravel and Tchaikovsky. He loathes Lady Gaga and Autotuned pop music.

    An example from long ago -- 1994, when I was young. I went to a video store (ask your parents) to rent "On the Waterfront." The girl working there never had heard of it, asking her coworkers if they ever had heard of All Along the Waterfront. I attribute that to ignorance -- a classic film is a classic film.

    +1...for the most part. There are a lot of kids out there with a strong sense of self but for a lot of kids these days..they just don't care about anything at all that's important and the media is way to influential. God. I sound like my parents! :lol: :roll:

    I'm 21 and Pearl Jam wasn't around when I was growing up. Yield came out when I was 8, Binaural when I was 10, Riot Act when I was 12, and Pearl Jam when I was 16. What chart topping songs can you honestly name off of those albums? The only song I even remember hearing on the radio was Last Kiss. By the time my generation was old enough for music to be relevant to them, Pearl Jam had taken a step back from the spotlight and had stopped putting themselves out there. The band's current music wasn't meant for me back then and I honestly wouldn't want to listen to it. I was 12, what need did I have for Love Boat Captains and hating George Bush. It doesn't surprise me that my generation doesn't know who Eddie Vedder is.

    If you look back 20 years to say, maybe when you were that age, and then think 20 years before THAT, back to 1971 or so, do you know anything about the music from that time? I'm not talking the greats, such as the Who or Zeppelin, but the radio stuff. Expecting someone who is 20 now to know music that was big when they were born isn't that realistic. Things have changed. But youth haven't. They're interested in now, not the past, for the most part. What do you know about Ke$ha for example (horrible btw), but hugely popular. Or Pitbull, or B.O.B.,... Bet those girls know all about them.

    So just let it go....

    The youth of today are young. They don't have the same basic cultural references that older people have.

    It's simple! :D

    But, they know other stuff that us older people don't. When I need to figure out new technology, I ask my fourteen year old son. He's on top of that stuff! ;)

    That's just sad. I work in a high school and it's all rap or country music (urgh). They all love Jersey Shore too, I tell them not to give those people their fifteen minutes and normal people DO NOT act like that. It's honestly really sad and a great presentation of the degeneration taking place in our country. The Mike Judge movie "Idiocracy" comes to my mind several times a day...that's where we are heading.

    My dad raised me on Hendrix, the Beatles, Zepplin, Cash, Nelson, Iron Butterfly and Neil are the main ones that have stuck with me. He's 56 and thinks I have great taste in music, loves Pearl Jam, though he doesn't know who they are, just knows the music from listening to it in my car the few times we've driven somewhere together and always comments about how good the music is. I tell him he taught me everything I know. I think that it's important to expose your kids to "good" music and not the radio hits that are on the air. My kids don't listen to the radio either, we always listen to my ipod in the car and apple tv in the house. They don't and won't have tv's in their rooms, they don't get to sit in front of the tv for hours on end and watch crap shows. My kids get to listen to what are now considered classics, Our music, music from the 70's, the beatles, and classical for the most part. Of course their exposed to the other crap out there (not all of it's crap), just from being around other people. Not all kids are ignorant to our music, they're just more current to what's popular now. My sister is 21 and I've never heard of half of the bands she listens to...and we're only 13 years apart. I just hope that the music I have exposed my kids to will help them decipher the good stuff from the crap stuff as they get older.

    I have to disagree: I worked with a bunch of young 20-somethings that were into the reality shows and the popular music of today. I made a comment about Bret Michaels and one girl said 'who?' I said 'Bret Michaels-Poison, Rock of Love 1, 2 and 3?' She just looked at me blankly and went back to listening to her Snow Patrol.

    I cannot listen to the radio here for more than an hour without hearing a PJ song-pretty much all the hits off of Ten and Vs. are in heavy rotation. The classic rock station will play them, usually in the 'off' hours...after 6PM.

    I think one of the issues is that kids aren't taught to appreciate music, school budgets are getting cut, so programs like music class are no longer. We now live in a 'disposable society' where if you don't want something, throw it away. They get bored with things at an amazing rate...all of the kids had a new phone every 6 months. They were always looking for the next 'bigger and better' thing.

    I'm glad to see that some of the board members here are teaching their kids to appreciate good music...Pearl Jam and others.
