"the wisdom that the old can't give away"

instead of lamenting that these kids don't know anything maybe you should have mentioned who he was and suggest a song you think they might like. maybe suggest a song that might speak to their age group. definitely something from Ten or Vs. were written from a perspective of that age group. Maybe a Leash, Porch, RearViewMirror. just maybe say something like 'oh he is the lead singer of Pearl Jam, you should check out a few of their songs, maybe a song like Leash or Porch from their early days.' don't beat them up for their not knowing and don't try and force them to like it, but give a suggestion. maybe one checks it out on Itunes and likes it and starts to explore more from the boys.

remember not everyone gets exposed to the same art. all we can do is give someone a hint and suggestion to take a look and maybe they will like it or not. if you've never seen a painting from a famous artist you can't be sure you don't like it.
  • Great! that means PJ are not corporate branded well-packaged household-name trash like U2. I'm sure all those kids know who Bono is and they haven't made a good album in 20 years. This post gives me some hope that we are still cool, even if some of us are getting old.

"The Simpsons: The Boy Who Knew To Much"
Skinner: If I were a truant boy out for a good time, I'd be right here: the Springfield Natural History Museum. [chuckles] You're mine, Simpson.

[Bart argues at a triple-R rated movie box office]
Bart: Look, if I was under seventeen, I'd be in school, right?
Ticket boy: Yeah, I guess you're right. Enjoy "Boobarama", sir.

[Skinner has left the museum, meanwhile]
Skinner: Why, there are no children here at the four-H club, either! Am I so out of touch...? No. It's the children who are wrong.

I was about to disagree and point out that Achtung Baby was an awesome album... and then I thought about how long ago it was released. 1991 really doesn't seem that long ago, but it's 20 freaking years! Zooropa was the last U2 album I really liked, and even that was released 18 years ago.

    Damn I feel old.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

Sometimes I feel the same way, that the youth today is lost. But then there are great moments when a 14 year old kid calls me up to take lessons and says, "I'm really into the early 90's stuff, like, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains"

Makes me smile, all the time! :)

If You Like Crunchy Guitar Riffs, Powerful Vocals, Melodic Guitar Solos, And Meaningful Lyrics..then you need to check out one of the most refreshing new hard rock bands in quite some time...-->The Liberty Underground<--

Same thing in Greece. That's why Pearl Jam must come back in Greece immediately. :)

This makes me feel sad. :( It makes me feel old, too. But don't worry about it; many youngER people do know who they are, and the whole scene is different now than it was back then. Times, they change, always, as we all know. But, hey, I wasn't even alive when Led Zeppelin was popular or when Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison were making music, but I have been listening to them my whole life. Pearl Jam will live on forever like that. Some people will get it, some won't. We're the lucky ones. We were THERE dude!!:lol:

I don't think there is anything "wrong" with them just because they don't know who Eddie Vedder is. I listen to several bands that I can't name one single member of. I'm sure the kids have probably at least heard of Pearl Jam, but if not, it's no big deal. They're a different generation, with a different pop culture radar. I can't name one member of Duran Duran, and I'm sure for people who were teenagers in the 80's there is something wrong with me.

There are a lot of things I think are "wrong" with the youth of today. Whether or not they know who Eddie Vedder is does not top my list.

yeah, i guess / know there is nothing wrong with them for not knowing. I guess it just makes it hit home how old i am getting.....

Which is why I am passing PJ onto my kids...gotta keep good music alive. there's too much crap out there these days.
Yup...my plan too. The Who and Neil Young have cropped up as a couple of my 9 year-old son's "new" favorites as a result.

Let me tell you kids about the first time I saw Pearl Jam. I had to walk to the concert uphill, in the snow, with no shoes on. Now lookie-here, back then Pearl Jam only cost a nickel....

    CLASSIC ROCK!!

    it was quite the realization.

but to your original post yea of course kids suck..you're old. just like old people didn't like me.

    It's true. :(

The "Classic Rock" like the Eagles, Rolling Stones, Who, and all that??? They're now considered "Oldies."

I think the "real" oldies is now something like "Golden Oldies."

Oldies is a term commonly used to describe a radio format that concentrates on music from a period of about 15 to 55 years before the present day.

In the 1980s and 1990s, "oldies" meant the 15 years from the birth of rock n roll to the beginning of the singer-songwriter era of the early 1970s, or about 1955 to 1972, although this varied and some stations chose 1950-1969.[citation needed] In the early 2000s, 1970s music was increasingly included,[1] and early 1980s music is beginning to also be called "oldies", though the term "classic hits" is used to distinguish the "new" oldies (the Generation X oldies) from the "old" oldies (the Baby Boomer oldies).[2]

So I guess this means that the "oldies" stations will start playing Ten and Vs soon enough.

    :(

True story...when I was in college, the dormitory was on one hill, and the academic buildings were on another hill separated by a valley.

So yes, I did have to walk uphill both ways.

    It's called. . .

You're getting older. It's a time honored tradition. Nothing is wrong with youth they just like what is currently going on musically in their own world
