The youth of today........

What is wrong with the youth of today? i walked into my local cafe today and ordered a grilled chicken burger.
Next to the register are some postcards of really nice artwork by a local girl (a friend of the cafe owner). One is a portrait of Heath Ledger and there is another one there of Michael Hutchence. I said to the owner "Her artwork is great, get her to do a portrait of Eddie Vedder and I will buy one"
so he says: "who is Eddie Vedder"
There is another girl behind the counter.....she says: "I have no idea"
There are two other girls in the cafe from the local university (CSU) and they say " who is he?"
They were all pretty young maybe 22 and under.
I refused to answer them and told them all to google it.
so back to the initial question: What is wrong with the youth of today? completely uncultured?

    it's sad really.

I have two employees in their very early twenties.

they know nothing about anything except Jersey Shore.

I don't criticize them or bring them down at all.. but i seriously pity them and all who are like them

I don't think there is anything "wrong" with them just because they don't know who Eddie Vedder is. I listen to several bands that I can't name one single member of. I'm sure the kids have probably at least heard of Pearl Jam, but if not, it's no big deal. They're a different generation, with a different pop culture radar. I can't name one member of Duran Duran, and I'm sure for people who were teenagers in the 80's there is something wrong with me.

There are a lot of things I think are "wrong" with the youth of today. Whether or not they know who Eddie Vedder is does not top my list.

I hear you, I guess that moment came for me the first time I heard Pearl Jam played on the "Classic Rock" radio station. Or when their videos started coming on VH1 Classic.

I've travelled alot over the years and been to to some pretty far out places, places where people hadn't even heard of Michael Jackson.... its not that surprising, Eddie isn't that famous in the scheme of things. Perhaps next time you could use an opportunity like that to spread the word.... ?

I haven't heard of half the music my nieces and nephews listen to, does that make me uncultured?

I can see how this new generation might not know them ... not a lot of radio play etc
and they are old to them  :o

often physical attraction rules the young girls ;)

I think if they keep playing festivals that will help ....
the young will run across them in their travels

but really those kids might just have been Lady Gaga fans... 'walk to the beat of a different drummer'

I experienced nearly the same thing. I was talking to the person who cuts my hair and mentioned the new R.E.M. cd.
    Just a blank stare.
I asked "Michael Stipe? 15 albums? Monster? Anything?"
    Blank stare.
I realize not everyone's a fan, but what rock do you have to be living under to not know PJ or R.E.M.?
