A Question About Riot Act

I wouldn't change the album at all. For me its perfect. Perfect for me.
Sometimes I skip over 'Thumbing My Way' - never really got into that one. 'You Are' was my initial favourite. I remember my 1st listen. The gap in the intro - I thought my cd had broke

Half Full and All Or None are my favourites now. And I love Help Help, especially the outro - great jamming from the band. I don't listen to the album everyday or every week but there is not a day goes by where I'm not humming a Riot Act song.
I just wish they'd try to play more of it live2000: Manchester

It is a great album. I dont understand why people dislike it so much.Personaly I think it would be the best sounding album if they tried to play it live in order. I know it will never happen (unless I win the lotto then they would do it in my back yard
)
Save you kicks ass. LBC is great,Cropduster amazing, Damn to many great songs on their to go threw but you get my point. I guess people have to hate some thing

This might be because it has too many tracks. Get rid of Ghost, Get Right, Help, Help, and You Are, and I think I look at it differently. I actually want to burn a new version of it with those songs deleted. I think they simply take away from the power of the album, as embodied in most of the other songs. With those tracks deleted we have a more focused album: the political and the existential. The album screams "what the fuck is going on?" and "where is my place in all of this?" especially if you lose the aforementioned tracks.
Love Can't Keep as an opener, Save You is amazing. The 1-2 remind me of Sometimes and Hail, Hail. Love the lyrics of Cropduster and Green Disease-perfect timing (though the music leaves a little to be desired). 1/2 Full and All or None close out beautifully.
That's it.
And, I agree with others: the album artwork is phenomenal. But, the music is more important.
I completely agree with this. Just like Vitalogy. If you take out some of the filler you have a different recording. You can even rearange the song order to suit.
Thank you.....but I love Vitalogy! It is perfect. I love these discussions.0 -
One more reason to love this band...
I can't think of too many bands in the last 20 years who have enough range and breadth to create albums that can capture both ends of the "accessibility spectrum."
There's a lot of raw expression, even some art-for-art's-sake type of stuff on Riot Act - I refer to it as a "demanding listening experience." Not as poppy or easily swallowed as "the Fixer" or even "Glorified G," but definitely full of risks.
But seriously, how many bands could give you "Amongst the Waves" on one hand and "Arc" on the other? Not too many...San Diego 10/25/00

i recently discovered that riot act really is my favorite. i think it has a lot of variety, more so than the two records that followed it. the themes of the songs were so timely then, a positive, and yet they still resonate with me. i like ed's voice on it. they sound mature yet progressive.
mostly, i guess, it just feels like a good progression from the albums preceding it. i do not feel that way about the last two. in that regard, riot act for me sort of encompasses everything pearl jam is, and still moves forward.0 -

I'm glad it is well-liked. It's kind of how I feel about most people that I don't like. I don't like them, but it feels good to know that someone does.

it's a very underrated album by fans and critics in my book. I think that when you look at it track by track there's some really great songs on this album and only a couple that i skip. i think aside from help help and bushleaguer every song on there is pretty well written all around. Lyrics are some of ed's best and i really like the mood around the production as well. All or none might be one of their best pieces of music that they've written and is such a killer way to end that album...anyone else listen to it a lot around fall?0

The only way Riot Act could be better was if it had Down and Undone on itPLAY THE SOUTH0

I love it! No Code is still probably my favorite, but in no way do I consider RA "weak". I agree with some of the other posters.. it has a very mature sound, and some really awesome songs.PJ fan since 1991 (I was 14); Ten Club member since '95.0
