Who did you introduce Pearl Jam to?

Hi there,

Being this my first post, I guess there could already be one similar somewhere...sorry if that's the case.

The thing is that here in my homecountry Spain, Pearl Jam is a known band but it is not as big as in the states. I have been a fan since my brother and I, teenagers, would watch videos from the Ten album on an english channel our TV used to catch. When I met the woman who would later become my wife, long after that, she knew that Pearl Jam existed but did not really know any songs. Now she is a big fan and last year we went to our first Pearl Jam concert together in Lisbon, Portugal. It was the last show of their european tour and they were great. We really loved it. I had seen Stone Gossard's Brad in the nineties in Canada, but it was our first, hope not last, Pearl Jam concert. We really enjoy their music together and since it has been a pleasure to take her through the journey of the Pearl Jam discography, I thought you might have been the same to someone...that is, the person that introduced Pearl Jam to someone, or maybe you have someone in particular that you learned about Pearl Jam from.

What's your story?

Thanks for reading this, and sorry for my english if there's anything wrong...

To my Mom :) I thought she might like songs like Black, Come back, Present Tense. And she did :)

Welcome! :) I listened to my first Pearl Jam tape (Live On Two Legs) back in 1998, thanks to my older brother. The first song that I listened to, was Do The Evolution (#13). God wanted to tell me something probably. :)

My wife. We got married 11 years ago. She had Ten and VS and never listened to the back end. She played all the radio play songs. I started to play the end of the albulms and she was like WOW! Binaural was out at the time and she got hooked on Nothing As IT Seems. From there PJ became her favorite band. We went to Florida on are honeymoon and saw them play in West Palm Beach and Tampa. We both can't wait to see Ed in Detroit in June. She also thinks Ed looks hot and gets all goo goo eyes. Thats cool. Pearl Jam radio is the favorite station in her car. I didn't have to make her a fan she just needed to listen to the rest of their music. PJ became her favorite band on her own and that is awesome. I just showed her the road.

I introduced my once-upon-a-time best friend to PJ. I was always talking about them...CONSTANTLY, and he was a big country music person but after listening to me go on and on and on, he started feeling em out. He got really hooked on them and we even went to 5 PJ concerts over the years. I'm sad that we are no longer friends, as my second EV ticket for Detroit should be his. Alas, I'll be going alone. :(

    Our son and daughter...

they were 7 and 5 in '91 so they grew up with PJ
and all their friends too ... big PJ sing alongs in the minivan

The music grows more important to them, like they learn something new
    when they listen
and they appreciate them more the older they get.

Like Dino and Louie for me.... a musical connection to my parents and childhood,
the feel good music in my soul.

It will continue too until they are old and I am long gone, this the power of music...
    connecting generations...connecting souls. :D

  • I am glad I got so many answers to my post!

I sure share the feelings and I think PJ in particular are a band to be shared...I don't know how to explain it but somehow I think it is a band that produces good feelings and a good vibe...something that of course is great to be shared...

every single one of my classes since i became a teacher in 1994.

used to do a whole week long thing on plot, foreshadowing, subliminal messages, etc that included the jeremy video. can't do that with 7th graders now, but i always have former students telling me that was their favorite thing from school.

    anyway, thousands of students...

and then of course, all kinds of friends and family. i've counted at least 20 people who i have taken to their first PJ concert.

funny, but i never tire of recruitment. :)

Introduced my then girlfriend (now wife) to them in '94 through them being on the car stereo permanantly then took her to a show in '96. She's still a big fan and has seen them 5 times now.

Got my nephew into them about 2007 and he's been to see them with me twice since, his favourite song is Black and McCready is his idol. His mom came with us to the 02 in 2009 and Hyde Park last year and can't wait for the next time, also my two neices came to Hyde Park.

Both my children sing along to most of the songs (they are 7 and 5) so I am doing my bit to keep the next generation educated! lol

I bought my dad a ticket as a christmas present to one of Eddie's solo shows here. When we were driving there before the show my dad was chatting about different musicians he has seen live and I told him that Eddie would blow all of them out of the water and obviously I was right :P . My dad was very impressed with Eddie's performance. His eyes were like this :o for most of the show, and to top off his night Eddie raised his eyebrows and smiled at my dad (who was clearly the oldest person in the audience!).

Best christmas present ever...don't think i'll be able to top that :) .

    Well let's see here...

I've introduced a multitude of people to Pearl Jam... if not to their music in general, at least to the live Pearl jam experience. Everyone I've taken to a show (6 different people across my 25 shows) all came out talking about how amazing it was. Focusing in on one person tho...

In 2002/3, I was dating this girl long distance. I met her through my cousin. We started off just chatting it up over AIM and grew closer. At the time, I would send her random MP3s here and there. If I was listening to a song that I really liked at the time, I'd ship it off to her. Completely unintentionally (but, in retrospect, obviously, given the artist distribution of my playlist), I sent her a heavy dose of Pearl jam. I didn't realize it, but I was quietly making her a fan.

2003 was the first year I went ape w/ PJ concerts (first time I had a job and could afford it). I went to 6 shows and needed companions. My default companion, my friend Kristen, could only afford two... she picked the two Camden shows, assuming they'd be the best. My girlfriend, Chelsea, surprised me when she said she wanted to go. She got Hershey (same day as my company picnic there) and State College (we met in the middle of PA for that one).

Her first ever show was State College, which has since become one of the better known shows in PJ history. She walked out of the building completely stunned. Since that day, I've only gone to one show without her (she tagged along on one of the Camden shows and we worked out seat/lawn arrangements). I'm at 25 shows now, she's at 19.

We got married in 2005 (saw PJ in Philly the night before we traveled back to Pittsburgh for the wedding), and our first dance was to Thin Air.

    So there you go!
