can you imagine a dj at 7:18 in the morning saying..

"and now, here's the new one from pearl jam....I GOT SHIT!"

don't know how well that would have gone over with the uptight listeners

    :D

They seriously wouldn't have got away with releasing a song with the word 'shit' in the title.

but why "ID" instead? i understand why shit wouldn't go over so well (though this is a band with a chorus that features the phrase 'fuck me").

I got ID is the orig and I got Shit is the alternate...... ID

"Id, ego, and super-ego are the three parts of the "psychic apparatus" defined in Sigmund Freud's structural model of the psyche; they are the three theoretical constructs in terms of whose activity and interaction mental life is described. According to this model, the uncoordinated instinctual trends are the "id"; the organised realistic part of the psyche is the "ego," and the critical and moralizing function the "super-ego."

Even though the model is "structural" and makes reference to an "apparatus", the id, ego and super-ego are functions of the mind rather than parts of the brain and do not necessarily correspond one-to-one with actual somatic structures of the kind dealt with by neuroscience."......

"The Id comprises the unorganized part of the personality structure that contains the basic drives. The Id is unconscious by definition."......

ah, that makes sense. I was always thinking ID as in the thing you need to get into a bar. They might revoke my social work degree for missing this one. thanks.

I always thought the lyrics were, "I walk the line" instead of "I walk in light"
So in my original interpertation, I thought it was about a field sobriety test. And he has his ID.

That is interesting about the Freud concept. Thanks for sharing!

I had always assumed the original title was I Got ID, and the alternate was I Got Shit, but I hear different things from different people. I'm pretty certain that I Got ID was the original, as others have said.

From what I know of the lyrics the song is pretty intense. And from what my wife tells me of The Id, The Ego and the Super Ego, I'd say Ed picked the best alternative title there could be. She studied psychology and was telling me about Freud once when she was studying in college.
