went to 3 shows last year, hartford and the 2 at msg...when all was said and done, this song stood out as the highlight for me...and i've never been a van halen fan, it wasn't about that
just something about them playing a FUN song like this...and i've seen it said on the youtube comments section that "this kind of song is everything pearl jam were against" and things like that...and i was just flipping through the "grunge is dead" book (which is great, by the way) and reading about how you were either punk or hair metal or whatever and "this is cool to listen to, and this is not" and all that teenage type thinking that the band and most of us my age are hopefully beyond
and at this point it can be about having fun and realizing music is music, they can play covers that are light hearted and fun, it doesn't all have to be by "true artists" like neil young and dylan (two of my favorites) and the who and the ramones....not to mentioned they've been playing most of their covers for almost 20 years, why not throw in some new, unexpected shit
can't put it into words, but as a fan who has been with them since day one (well, summer of '92, close!) and doesn't post on here much anymore, this just really stood out for me as a cool new trick for MY band to pull out just when i thought i'd seen it all

"I'll tell you what: If all I had was Pearl Jam, and I didn't have another band in the world, I would not be worried. Because in there is the essence of making great music. You don't have to use it all at once, but it's there." - Neil Young

It's funny that you mention people commenting about how this type of thing was "everything they used to be against," as I have also wondered this. Not about this song, but over some of their music tastes in general. Mike has played Van Halen licks forever at the end of songs. And isn't just about everyone in the band an admitted KISS fan?
So I never really was able to reconcile stuff like that - but maybe it was just a lot of media and critics that told us 'The Grunge' movement was totally against 80s pop-rock. To listen to a lot of them, you would think Seattle was this hotbed coalition of artists with an agenda to destroy hair metal, but maybe it was just coincidence? Maybe it was just the turning of the tides? And maybe, just maybe, these guys had a few Motley Crue, Poison or Van Halen cassettes in their day?
I dunno, but I was at the Hartford show too, and while I totally enjoyed the suprise cover, I'm not gonna lie that I was scratching my head a little. I remember thinking, "Am I really watching Eddie trying to pull off a David Lee Roth impression?" Lol, but it was good fun like you said - and certainly a very unique (arguably the most unique) moment of the tour.0 -
stuffnjunk - enjoy the fun aspect and rock out my friend! hell yeah, when I found out they did ATBL, I was stunned and couldn't wait to see it /hear it myself...I love it and the #1 reason I bought the boot (fantastic boot)
ed sang it like that song piped thru his ride with the windows down - like all of us, right?
whip it in philly - same deal
Fun matters and I'm damn glad our fave band still likes to have it

My friend, who's a huge Van Halen fan, was going nuts at the show once Mike started playing the opening notes.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

ATBL was also one of the highlights of the Hartford show for me too. It was my son's first PJ concert so it was a special night all around.
Eddie commenting on the UConn women's basketball team and their fantastic winning streak was great too. "You gotta take the three point baby...." What a night!0 -
I'd have to change my pants if I ever heard PJ play ATBL live !0

You won't have to since it was an OTOTO.cuyler41 wrote:I'd have to change my pants if I ever heard PJ play ATBL live !

I am a huge Van Halen fan and think it was just badass that they covered that song.

I loved being there for this. One more reason why Hartford was an awesome show. It's funny because Eddie went through the OTOTO speech and given 100 guesses I would not have been able to guess what song they were about to play. Just another great memory of this band.
SOLAT --> Ain't Talkin' About Love --> Porch was one helluva combo. Great night.___________________________________________

I am a big Van Halen fan and was at that show. When I first heard the opening of the song, it took a second or to click with me that is was ATBL, when it did I went wild! I was surprised how many people were really into it also. That show was amazing, my favorite PJ show. Also, it led right into a blistering version of Porch.
I love the fact that PJ likes the same bands that I loved as a kid and still do. Another top PJ moment for me was when Ace Frehley came out at MSG 2 in 2008.0 -

i think ppl need to relax and live a little...getting caught up whether the cover fits the band etc etc is moronically hilarious. It took about 10 seconds for me to realize what was going on (I used to listen to this song alot in HS when I was in my classic rock/70s/80s phase) - and what made it so memorable for me was completely rocking out and singing at the top of my lungs while a kid about 5 yrs younger than me was doing the same thing - we high fived about 3 times during the song while we both air guitared and sang the choruses
i didnt realize that mike tried playing a snippet of Eruption until it was mentioned on the boards...its still a bit difficult to hear on the boot but it's there. I still get goosebumps when i play it in the car - so awesome - OT OTO BABY!!!

Now that we are on the subject, I still for the life of me can't understand the connection or relevance of the UCONN woman's hoop team and this song - I was just as confused standing there live listening to Eddie's introduction to the song as I am now listening to the boots - other than the "you gotta take the 3 point baby" line for some effect, how does the song signify the woman's hoop team? Am I missing something?0

There is no connection. It was just Eddie talking, adding local flair to the show.___________________________________________

This is my thinking of it: during the streak, the UConn women's team would dominate every team and by the scores, it would seem like they showed no love to the teams.BostonGaarden wrote:Now that we are on the subject, I still for the life of me can't understand the connection or relevance of the UCONN woman's hoop team and this song - I was just as confused standing there live listening to Eddie's introduction to the song as I am now listening to the boots - other than the "you gotta take the 3 point baby" line for some effect, how does the song signify the woman's hoop team?
