It's different from other PJ songs because Niel Young plays guitar on it, and if I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure Brendan O'Brien plays bass. Whatever distortion Niel uses on the guitar is just amazing.

I got shit is about unrequited love, which, if done properly, can make for some great lyrics. In I got shit it was done properly.
If hope can grow from dirt like me ...

That is my fave PJ song as well! I had days where I listened to it like five times in a row ... It just overwhelms me every time :)

My preferred version is the studio one but I hope I will hear them playing it live once in my life.

My favorite Pearl Jam song. Some time ago I came across an auction for the original handwritten lyrics that came from Ed's notebook. Apparently, Ed authenticated the lyrics. Writing a letter to the auction house on his own personal stationery. The letter he submitted reads “Yes I did write the actual lyrics to “I Got Id-.” Later, “I Got Shit”-. Thought it may get played on the radio, so initial title was kept as “Id”-. They came from my notebook – don’t know how they got ripped from the book. Don’t think they were stolen, but it’s a halfway decent song. So I approve. All the best, war is over, if you want it.”

To those that debate what the lyrics for the chorus are...from what I can read, the orignals say:

Oh, I walked in light when you held my hand that night
Oh, I walked in light when you hold my close
Oh, I paid the price...but I'll come back in your life
Oh, I made a (fight?), hold you only (time/friend?)

    The studio version goes...

But, I walked in light when you held me in that night
Oh, I walked in light when you held my hand that night
Oh, I walked in light when you held me close that night
I paid the price...never held you in real life

And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....

That's really an impressive job based on opposites!
It doesn't necessarily leads you to something fixed and that's what I like the most about it; it still leaves you the opportunity to find your own meaning of the lyrics and the whole situation portrayed.
    Thanks for proposing it :)
