So far nothing really, other than brendan o'brien producing it, and I think Mike said they have about 4 or 5 songs done (don't quote me on that last part... he may have said "ideas" and not "songs")...

    that's about it.

    just speculation, really.
people think it could be late 2008, early 2009, or that pearl jam could just pull a radiohead/raconteurs and go "the album is ready. it will be sold next week."

though that would be awesome, for some reason I doubt pearl jam would do that...

My advice to the boys: Take your time! Listen to some old Neil Young (like you obviously did before recording Vitalogy) and let it flow!

Wouldn't it be better to get an absolutely stellar album in '10 than a mediocre one in '09?

Mike says "Some of it's kind of poppy and some of it's a little hard. We want it to grow up a little bit. We have to revisit it a few times."

"Brendan works really fast," bassist Jeff Ament has told Billboard.com. "He's a super pro. I've always felt, working with him, that he understood me as a bass player and that's not always easy. A lot of producers are there to please the singer. But I've always had a great rapport with him. I can tell him I want something to sound like the O'Jays or Led Zeppelin or PJ Harvey and he gets it."

Though only "four or five" songs are complete so far, McCready said the band hopes to release the record in 2008.

"We've had one session of writing and it has yielded ... about five ideas so far," McCready said during a conference call with reporters about this year's Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn., which Pearl Jam will headline on June 14.

Theres a big difference between complete and ideas - i wonder if its a trick. But good news is maybe 2008!

What's crazy it is has been over 2 years since last release, can't believe it. I say jam this one out raw and start another one next year. No time to waste. Better yet do the double and then release another B sides.

I'm worried about 'kind of poppy'.

They're gonna want to do the full promotion deal because they are afraid they are slowly losing fans (and more importantly, money). That's why there's no more bootlegs. They are slowly but surely selling out.

I hope i dont get too much grief for saying this but im actually looking forward to their "kind of poppy" ideas. Theyve been an incredible band for so many years its time to get their music out to more of an audience and maybe show the population what good music actually is. Just because its "poppy" wouldnt mean they are selling out or anything. Just further growing as a band and further experimenting.

hmmm... theskyiscrape are reporting (or is that rumouring) that there will be bootlegs from this summer's tour...

sometimes people on here are so negative about everything i have to wonder why you bother buying the albums or going to shows if all you're going to do is moan about it all...

...no, there's nothing wrong with saying you don't like an album or show but to start criticising an album before it comes out or a tour before it's started just seems odd to me...
Oh yeah? Well, I've had about enough of morons and halfwits, dolts, dunces, dullards and dumbbells - and you chowderhead yokel, you blithering hayseed, you - you've had enough of me?

Well I thought there were going to be boots, too, based on Mike's comment. But I read something in another topic saying that Stone said they may not do boots. I'm not being negative, I'm speaking the truth. Personally, I've never had a problem with a band trying to be popular (a.k.a. "selling out"), although if, for Pearl Jam, part of that meant no more boots, then I'd be disappointed.

when they're officially announced I'll believe it..in the meantime, it's wishful thinking (and people for months before last year were saying 'of course there'll be bootlegs'..well, we know what happened..

I don't take what Mike might have said in an interview as any indication there'll be boots, certainly not for all the shows...I hope, but I don't count on it and will have my taping recorder ready..

They sold out in like 1990 or 1991 like 20 years ago. This is the USA after all, is there something wrong with that?

can someone tell me what the definition on "SOLD OUT" means because i dont think anyone really knows.

i say that because if a band does one little thing that other bands have done or may do something differently, like being a little more 'poppy', then they are considered sold out.

lets just get rid of that word altogether shall we?

In terms of Pearl Jam, selling out means embracing the commercialism that they have been "against" for so long. This commercialism entails press interviews, promotion in the media, ads, music videos, Grammys (and other awards), and other various marketing strategies which are associated with the "music industry". Starting around 1994 this also entails Ticketmaster.

Yes, early in their career they embraced these things because, really, that was the only way they were going to get popular. Then suddenly around '92 they started disapproving of these practices and opted to "rebel" against them. Their fans all went along with them and actually became more loyal as a result. Then the battle escalated with the Ticketmaster dispute. It was at this point that the band took on the status that it held until around 2005, meaning a sort of huge but undergroundish following. Very few interviews and almost no media coverage. Their attitude of "take as many pictures as you want, record us, tape us" is very anticommercial. Then they released the official bootlegs. Most bands would never do such a thing and even if they did would not offer them to fans at such a low cost.

But, starting with 'Yield' but not REALLY taking hold until around 2005, the band has slowly overturned their attitude of anticommercialism. They have begun doing more interviews, like Eddie's big interviews with RS in '05 and '06, more album promotion, more TV appearances, etc. Personally I have absolutely no problem with this. Some people (the elite, veteran fans) may take issue with this but I don't. However, if this overturning of anticommercialism means no more official boots or no more taping/recording/picture taking at shows I would be very disappointed.

"Sad" is classified as "kind of poppy", would an album with a couple of those be so terrible? I thought "Sad" around here was near the holy grail.

Considering their most "poppy" song is sad, id say theres nothing to worry about any "poppy" pearl jam.

I don't mind if they do some "poppy" stuff. It is far too easy to get caught up in placing genre labels on everything. If the music moves you, then what gives(?).......................plus, I'd say the band has earned the right to make whatever kind of music/sounds they want.

people just need to chill on this board. wanting to be more popular and selling out are totally different ideas. wanting to put out poppier songs? maybe they want a change of pace. i thought i read somewhere that it was stone who wanted to experiment more than anyone anyway, maybe the rest of the band wants to chill with the experimenting. i mean for goodness sakes its not like their music is being played during ford commercials. and about the boots, let's just wait on that, people are really jumping the gun on that issue. there hasn't been so much as a tweet in months, so lets just calm down a bit and stop accusing them of this or that when we don't really have all that much information yet.

If pearl jam were a "household name"......if every Tom, Dick & Harry could name 20 pj songs and owned at least 6 studio releases......if Wal-Mart had every single pj CD available 24/7.......if Mc'Donald's had a Boom-Burger.....if you could buy a pj tee-shirt at every outlet mall in the middle of no-where....if everyone loved the band as much as MOST of us around here do.....how could that be a bad thing?
