I never speak about Backspacer, in fact.. rarely listen to it
but.. now i'm sitting here listening to "The End" and it really is a beautiful song. The strings sound perfect.

The first time I listened to Backspacer was on my headphones at work. I should have had the discipline to wait until I got home, but I just couldn't wait to listen to it. Unfortunately, work got in the way and I was only listening with half an ear (
). Until The End came on that is, when I suddenly noticed I could not see my computer screen throught the haze of tears...
...what a beautiful song indeed!!!0 -
I got an xmas present two years ago of a token for "Afternoon Tea" in a hotel. AT is a big posh tradition ithat came from Britain. Anywhoo we didn;t get to go and we gave the token to my mate Nikki's sister for her and her husband to go. The reason? He was dying of cancer and hadn't got long left so it was a nice break from the kids for them both. He died 3 months later
Anyway point is, 3 or so months after that Back Spacer arrives and I put on the CD and when The End came on, i stopped dead in my tracks, because Ed had written lyrics that EXACTLY matched the scenario of my mates bro-in-law.
The sister is doing okay now and the kids are young enough to accept things, but its just nuts how the song hit the scenario right on the button.
Ed is a genius!RDS Dublin - Aug 26 1995 (Neil Young with Pearl Jam)

The End is my favorite on Backspacer it truly is a lovely ending.Jeremys Spoken wrote:I never speak about Backspacer, in fact.. rarely listen to it

It shows Eddie's real talent.
To speak someone else's pain so beautifully,
as though it was his own.

right there in front of me.
I felt like the room got small and everyone was gone but his voice. Mesmerizing.
I am a believer...in him

PJ live is a religious experience. Not that I want church to be a rock concert b/c that repulses me. The idea that everyone is participating and going towards the same place but different places at the same time. Seeing them live is just amazing. The energy in the room that night you can't make up. I completely agree with you Pandora, they have a way of making the most impersonal arena feel like a living room.Boston 5/17/10

These are the exact 2 words that come into my mind when I hear The End- it is so hauntingly beautiful. Didn't give it much of a listen until I heard it live and realized just how incredible the song is, now it is one of my favorites on BS. Also fun to play on guitarMy3rdEye wrote:It's haunting... but beautiful

The song is breathing, sometimes struggling to breathe... you can hear it fighting for it's last breath at the conclusion as well.~ Chicago 5/16/06 ~ Chicago 8/23/09 ~ Chicago 8/24/09 ~

It's pretty, but it's such a sad song that I can't listen to it anymore. It's the most downer ending to an album I think I've ever heard.Chicago 2000 : Chicago 2003 : Chicago 2006 : Summerfest 2006 : Lollapalooza 2007 : Chicago 2009 : Noblesville (Indy) 2010 : PJ20 (East Troy) 2011 : Wrigley Field 2013 : Milwaukee (Yield) 2014 : Wrigley Field 20160
