Patagonia Music Collective with Jack Johnson, Pearl Jam – Partnership Music Benefits Enviro Groups

    February 15, 2011

    PRESS RELEASE

Patagonia Inc., the environmentally minded apparel company, and some of music’s most talented artists have come together to form the Patagonia Music Collective. The Patagonia Music Collective will launch, Tuesday March 1, 2011 at www.patagonia.com/music.

Exclusive tracks from over 100 artists will be sold at $.99/each with the net proceeds going directly to the artist’s favorite environmental group. Musicians on board thus far include Jack Johnson, Pearl Jam, Bonnie Raitt and Jon Cleary, Maroon 5, Philip Glass, Zac Brown Band, moe., The Bad Plus, Blitzen Trapper, Mason Jennings, John Scofield, Piers Faccini, Switchfoot, Brett Dennen, Ky-Mani Marley, Sun Kil Moon, Umphrey’s McGee, Ben Solee, RaRa Riot, Spoek Mathambo, Taj Mahal, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Drive By Truckers, Bobby Long, String Cheese Incident, Ki: Theory, Moondoggies, Vusi Mahlesela, Disco Biscuits, O.A.R., Ziggy Marley, Los Lobos, Dawes, Abigail Washburn, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Brandi Carlile and many more.

The Patagonia Music Collective will launch with 24 tracks with 4 new tracks released each subsequent week from established acts and emerging artists. Exclusive compilation records will be available at varying intervals at Patagonia stores worldwide and more.

Patagonia views the “collective” as a new model for green giving, as well as a way to engage a non-Patagonia demographic in environmental activism.

“As a company, we’re aware that the more customers we can engage, the more we can give back to the planet. About a year ago, we realized if we partnered directly with enviro-minded artists, we could hit upon a demographic entirely outside of Patagonia’s current customer base – a demographic that is interested in music and the environment, but might not be skiers, climbers or surfers,” notes Rob BonDurant, Patagonia’s VP of marketing, “The Collective engages artist’s fan bases directly – bringing new people to the Patagonia brand and the concept of environmental giving. This program is effective for bands in that it ties their fans to a cause the band supports; it’s effective for Patagonia in that it introduces new people to the brand, and increases the amount of money that’s being funneled directly to grassroots enviro orgs.”

The tracks will be available at www.patagonia.com/music, through a dedicated iphone app and a widget at participating artist’s websites. Fulfillment will be handled by iTunes.

This is a long term project. The company’s goal is to amplify the causes that are important to the participating artists and turn people on to excellent new music.

The PMC is not a record label. Artists are simply donating tracks for a sustainable music initiative that benefits the environment. Patagonia is providing a platform for artists to participate in a larger effort to increase awareness of both the enviro groups and causes artists would like to support and the music/artists associated with Patagonia Music.

    About Patagonia
Patagonia, with sales last year of over $333M, is noted internationally for its commitment to product quality and environmental activism. Incorporating environmental responsibility in to product development, the company has, since 1996, used only organically grown cotton in its clothing line. In Fall 2011, the company’s entire product line will be recyclable thorough its Common Threads Recycling Program. The company also advocates corporate transparency through its interactive website, The Footprint Chronicles, which outlines the environmental and social footprint of individual products. Patagonia was featured as The Coolest Company on the Planet on Fortune Magazine’s April 2007 cover.

Thanks so much for tracking this down - that is so weird, it completely disappeared from the website only hours later! And patagonia.com/music isn't working either. hmm....

Nevertheless, must keep an eye on this as hopefully it will offer some interesting new stuff.
