Does Vs really need to be remastered?

I purchased the new super deluxe box set. But I don't understand it. Vs sounds as fresh and tight as when it was released back in '93 thanks to a great job Brendan O'Brien did. So with the new deluxe edition coming up in march we are talking about newly remastered Vs and Vitalogy. How can they go and remaster such a great sounding record at all? The question remains: are we going to get a recording with just higher level of loudness?
I really look forward to hearing this.

Obviously the band thinks so, which in all honesty, is all that matters. A lot of times records are rushed to meet deadlines and things are left undone. They will probably go back and take more time with each tracks EQ, etc and then go through the whole mastering process again. Levels of individual tracks may not be to the liking of the band. I know Ed always hated Dave's cymbals so I'm sure they will be lower in the mix now. Don't worry though, they aren't going to ruin it that's for sure. hahahahahahaha

The Sony albums have to be re-released per a Sony contract. Only makes sense to put some bells and whistles on them to help sell em.

Somewhat i am sure relates to $$, but to be fair it is a comemeration to a time and place. Remember 950,000 copies of the album sold in just its first week and vitalogy not far behind. I for one am really interested to hear the bonus tracks along with the entire self pollution tape. And all the other things too

  • It does still sound great, but If it were up to me I would push everything into the red much like what Iggy pop did with the 90's remix/remaster of raw power. I do, however, realize that that is just me.

Its like when a DVD is released years later with an extra scene or alternate ending. Is it necessary? Definitely not...

But it will generate a lot of people double dipping and buying both releases... $$$$$

We'll see though - maybe they'll make it sound worth the cash, but I think Ten is going to spoil us all because they really reworked that album and I think from here on out its just going to be a little louder.

The bonus materials are cool though so I suppose I'll keep telling myself I'm paying $150 for the vinyl and the Boston show as incomplete as it may be.

    This.....

Remastering is done simply to bring an album into the modern age, for the way people listen to music now and the way newer songs will sound next to them on the radio.

The reissues are gonna sound virtually the same. 99% chance they're gonna be mastered like S/T and BS, which means distortion and muddiness. Hopefully somebody slipped them a post it and told them to not compress the shit out of them.
  • Welcome to the new world order......

YES. Everything gets remastered now because a new 'master' means a new copyright on a new sound recording which means "Life of the artist/copyright holder + 80 years".

There will not be new music in the US anymore!
