Your Alternate Binaural ~ Retrack Binaural

I did a search and came up with nothing. If a thread like this is here somewhere, sorry I missed it.

I know that this has been done before but I have always thought this was an interesting topic and have always wished Binaural's track list was reworked. I swear I have done this before, but I never put the time or thought into it before like I have today. I am really happy with what I came up with. What do you think?

1. Of the Girl
2. In the Moonlight
3. Fatal
4. Light Years
5. Sleight of Hand
-- Thunderclap (instrumental)--
6. Insignificance
7. Breakerfall
8. Grievance
9. Nothing As It Seems
10. Sad
11. Strangest Tribe
-- Harmony (Instrumental)--
12. Rival
13. Education
14. Parting Ways
-- Foldback (Instrumental)--

I am pretty pleased with this track list and sequence. Soon Forget is the obvious choice as a "hidden track". I left it out because I felt like the album was in danger of running long as it is. I also considered leaving Breakerfall off and placing Education in that position, which I think works well too, but I am one of the few that has always enjoyed Breakerfall. I decided to keep it in the mix. As it stands, Binaural is near the bottom of list when it comes to Pearl Jam albums for me. With this track list it could easily have been right at the top of the heap.

Songs left off:
1. God's Dice
2. Evacuation
3. Thin Air
4. Soon Forget

Songs added:
1. In the Moonlight
2. Fatal
3. Sad
4. Strangest Tribe
5. Education
(Thunderclap/Harmony/Foldback)

  • I'm pretty happy with the listing you have provided. The main change I think I'd make would be leaving off In the Moonlight and keeping God's Dice instead. But altogether I think we have pretty similar tastes.
  • I might not put In the Moonlight that close to the beginning and I probably wouldn't leave Education that far back, but that's just me. Song wise, I think you made all the right selections and this is a really good track list.

Glad you dig the track list and the song choices. Would you swap In the Moonlight and Education? I suppose that could work. For some reason I just really dig In the Moonlight at the front of the album. It just seems to set up the dark and moody textures of the rest of the tracks really well.

Cool man. I love In the Moonlight and think it is a very interesting song too. Not a fan of God's Dice at all. Pretty cool that you had only one change. Not too shabby at all!

No Sleight of Hand? It is my second favorite PJ song after Release. Bummer to see it missing.
I see you didn't mess around to much with the track sequence, just basically replaced a few of the tunes.

  • The beginning of the record is soooooo slooooooooow. They always have a rocker in there and "In the Moonlight" doesn't count, its a slow tempo song. I love "Breakerfall" as an opener and think "Of the Girl" is a better later record song, also I would leave "God Dice" on there and Sleight of Hand is to early in the record as well.

The beginning of my mix may be "slow" in tyempo, but it certainly isn't boring. I hear what you are saying, but just because PJ always has a rocker in the beginning of an album doesn't mean it is necessary. However, I think in my mix either Grievance or Breakerfall could be swapped with Fatal to meet your criteria. Also, why do you believe Slight of Hand has to be a late in the album song? Just curious. As for Of the Girl, I love it as an opener. And God's Dice is just a crappy song in my opinion. That's why I didn't include it. But that is just an opinion.

This is fun, but not exactly the exercise I had in mind. The idea was to force yourself to edit the record into what could actually have been released as the album Binaural. Including every single track and every b-side, etc. defeats the purpose and obviously would never fit onto one album. If you had to edit it down to size, what would you do?

only one or two changes that i would make for myself -
Take Fatal, Education and Strangest Tribe off the album
Add God's Dice (I LOVE this song), Evacuation, Thin Air and maybe soon forget instead of one of the instrumentals Soon Forget

I did this thread when I was off sick from work last year which was more to do with Riot Act but I found that tweaking the songs around was fun and these four albums I used still get listened to in this order now. I never added anything which I would maybe do now but Binaural sounds great like this... ;)

Glad you dig the track list and the song choices. Would you swap In the Moonlight and Education? I suppose that could work. For some reason I just really dig In the Moonlight at the front of the album. It just seems to set up the dark and moody textures of the rest of the tracks really well.

I think I would switch Moonlight and Education, sure. Education just doesn't feel like it should be at the end. Another possibility I would consider is moving Breakerfall to the Moonlight spot. So you'd start with Of the Girl and rock straight into Breakerfall.

Sweet. I can see either of those solutions working. I could like this set up for sure:

    1. Of the Girl
    2. Breakerfall
    3. Fatal
    4. Light Years
    5. Sleight of Hand

I've been toying with the idea of doing this for Riot Act too. I haven't started anything yet, but I just might have to do it soon.

  • Oh OK, here it is with 14 cuts
    Anything In Between
    Grievance
    Sad
    Breakerfall
    Puzzle And Game
    Fatal
    Gods' Dice
    Nothing As It Seems
    Thin Air
    Insignificance
    Evacuation
    Soon Forget
    Parting Ways
    Strangest Tribe

This album originally had some great cuts, however I can't believe how many better ones were left off the record.

Well, I was going to start thinking and working on re-tracking Riot Act... Then after getting this all together, I found two new (to me) Binaural Sessions songs that I was inexplicably unaware of (wtf?). So , I have done a couple changes/additions. This album could have easily been my favorite PJ record. Here's to hoping another creative session as fruitful as the Binaural sessions happens again.

    1. Of the Girl
    2. Anything in Between
    3. Breakerfall
    4. Fatal
    5. Puzzles & Games
    6. Sleight of Hand
    -- Thunderclap (instrumental)--
    7. Insignificance
    8. Education
    9. Grievance
    10. Nothing As It Seems
    11. Sad
    12. Strangest Tribe
    -- Harmony (Instrumental)--
    13. Rival
    14. In the Moonlight
    15. Parting Ways
    -- Foldback (Instrumental)--

I think this is the best ever! Haha! God, if only...

Is Anything in Between actually a Binaural outtake?

I'm glad that you like it. I'm currently obsessing about it. Trying to make that perfect "Binaural". It's running a bit long right now. I'm considering cutting Fatal, or one or two of the Instrumentals, or Strangest Tribe. I'm not sure. I love working on it though!

I have cut a couple of the instrumentals. This version runs at 60 minutes. I think that is doable for a realistic full length album. I have burned this onto a CD and played it a number of times and enjoy it a lot. I think I am finally satisfied with this alternate version, and I don't see myself changing it again.

  • Hey man, I'm digging your version as well. I love Anything In Between and Puzzle and Game is a great version of Light Years. From what I read, they didn't keep that version on the album because it sounded a bit like Given To Fly, but I think it is amazing.
