like so many of you, i have had pj on the brain since this 20 year anniversay weekend was tentatively announced. i will roll wherever and whenever it happens, ukuleles always in tow. i know there are several other uke lovers in the ten club, and it might be a great idea to have a large jam.

btw, world record for most people playing at once is 850+ players set at london ukulele festival in 2009 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhCzXjLE04c

we get numbers like that and the boys just might come out and join us.

10C ukers unite! and if you don't play, plenty of time between now and then to pick one up. the ukulele is truly magic.

i'll post this here and something similiar on UU to gauge interest.

peace

I don't play the uke but just wanted to add I love when Ed talks about his uke being his happy little friend in one of his '08 shows. Can't remember which show it is but it's cool. :)

Hell yeah! I'll bring em both soprano and baritone ;) I also have a feeling I am going to be restricted on bringing instruments on this trip.

  • as date approaches, i'll send out some pms interested parties, though there seem to be only a few. hopefully it'll turn into one of those "i told some good people, and they told two friends, and they told two friends, and so on and so on and so on" i would just love so much to have a giant uke (pearl) jam.

I don't play but this morning was thinking about learning so I could then teach my son. Can anybody recomend a uke for me to buy? What type/s does ed use? Is it going to take a LONG time to get the basics? I know nothin so any help would be appreciated.

    thanks.
  • go cheap but not too cheap. unless you are very wealthy, then go for some thing awesome like a mainland. i started on a lanikai pinapple soprano from musicians friend for about 50 bucks, and upgraded the strings to aquila nyguts which made a huge difference ("how much difference does it make?")the frets are quite small, so i really had to jam my fingers into tight quarters to get where i wanted to go. played it for about a year, then scored a tenor sized lankai and was amazed at how much more space there was, making it much easier to get a nice solid press on each string. i was glad i learned on such a miniscule sized one though, made the jump to a larger one much easier.
ed plays a custom made earnest instruments tenor sized "tululele" which is the one shaped like a fender telecaster. you can buy a concert sized one for about 700 bucks
the great folks at ukulele underground - http://ukuleleunderground.com/ - offer free lessons and instruction and even ukulele university which is not free, but very worthwhile.
the learning curve is steep. the instrument is addictive, therapudic, versatile, portable, calming. i'll shut up now. just get one, jump in, and don't look back. my two cents. jc

loved it, had loved the sound of the uke for a while so i went and got one
been teaching myself since, love it, it is beautiful
and so easy if you already play guitar :D

i would love to be a part of this, but won't be at the weekend bash thing

I have been looking on www.hawaiimusicsupply.com and they have free lessons on YouTube. I am interested in buying one and learning to play....I'll have to scrape up some money unless anybody has a used one they wanna sell me?

if you are just beginning go for a cheaper one, like a Makala or any of the other brands that are for beginners. Shouldn't cost a HUGE amount, my Makala Red one cost me about £30 and it's pretty good, especially since I changed strings. Sounds much better :)

    thanks for all that info.
  • i first saw that uke on that there video, then again when ed an mike crashed conan's live show, and i said "i gotta have one", so i did some research and found this guy, joel eckhaus, who owns earnest instruments. he said, "yeah eddie called me up and told me what he wanted and i just built it for him," and i was like "ed called you, like, on the phone?" and he just says, "sure" like its no big deal.
i got the budget ok'd by the wife and scored one last summer in daphne blue with a black pickguard. it is the coolest thing i own.

you got it custom made from same guy eh? Post a pic if you can.
  • not custom made - joel made 50 or so like mine which is concert sized. ed's was a custom made tenor, the next size up. sorry, i don't know how to post pics.
