Johnny Rotten comments about Eddie Vedder

I was listening to the PiL cover on Live on Ten Legs today and it got me thinking about this....

Does anyone remember a good few years back (maybe ten years or so) Johnny Rotten made a comment in an interview; something to the effect of "I would rather listen to a boy band than a fake like Eddie Vedder"? I can't remember the exact quote but I seem to recall it was rather scathing.

Maybe this has been done to death on here but I did a search and couldn't find anything.

  • He was Johnny Rotten, not Johnny "Say Nice Things About Younger Musicians". No big deal in my opinion.

Also, one of the Ramone's called Ed a punk poser. Whatever.

Anyone that sells records sucks. There's no such thing as jealousy.
  • Johnny Rotten was mentioned in the Romones quote. So i think that is where you are getting this. If anyone remmbers Jonny actually bashing eddie.. post it up

    Interview with Marky Ramone

What was it like having Eddie Vedder induct the band at the awards ceremony?

    MARKY:
Eddie Vedder has nothing to do with punk rock and I feel it was more of a Johnny thing, since Johnny moved to Hollywood and he's always wanted to be Mr. Hollywood. They're a whole different breed out there. I think Joe Strummer or Johnny Rotten would have been cooler to induct us, not somebody that is into grunge.

    NYROCK:
He looked pretty silly in that Mohawk too....

    MARKY:
It was like, let's be the punk for the day. Nice guy, but we were never into his music.

    From Marky Ramone's Wikipedia page:

"In October 2001, Marky appeared on MTV accepting a lifetime achievement award presented by Bono of U2 to the Ramones." :?

Does he also complain about this in the interview quoted above?

I don't know. I've been a fan of the Ramones for ever and ever. That's not a cool comment to make, and maybe we should just leave it at that. I'll hope that if, say John Mayer inducts Pearl Jam in the Hall of Fame, the guys will be cool enough and mature enough not to make snarky comments about the guy, you know?

As for Johnny Rotten, come on. Wouldn't you be more surprised if he sat down and gave an interview about how nothing has moved him like "Daughter"??

fuck 'em if they can't take a joke

  • The Sex Pistols were just as relevant and their fan base was just as rabid and passionate

They deserved to be honored by the RRHOF.

Eddie Vedder really couldn't give a flying fuck what Johnny Rotten or anyone else has to say
    about him, why should you?

Dude, no way. They were together for only 3 years and put out just ONE ALBUM. They're like a genital wart on the penis of Rock N Roll history.

I usually try to stay out of subjective arguments regarding music- but yours has to be one of the most ridiculous comments Ive read in some time. You may not like the Sex Pistols, and thats fine, but to imply that Never mind the Bollocks is anything but groundbreaking, is outrageously ignorant. And dont just take my word for it...ask anyone who knows anything about music!

Just as a side note, back in about 1983-84, when Rolling Stone magazine was worth more than the paper its printed on, rated that ONE album as the second best album OF ALL TIME, losing only to the mighty Beatles....I went out and bought it that day and it blew my fucking mind!

I didn't say that I don't think "Nevermind The Bollocks..." is groundbreaking. I'm just disagreeing with 'slap upside the head' when he says they're as relevant as PJ with as rabid a fanbase. They're like Bill Walton the former NBA player. He had a few good years, got hurt, and that was that. The Pistols had a few good years, self-destructed, and that was that.

It's still a hugely influential album. Would there have been a nevermind without a never mind the bollocks?

Ok...this sounds different than calling them a genital wart. I wouldn't say that they are as relevant as PJ either, simply because, as you noted, their career was tragically very short. However, that record changed my life, and alot of my friends' lives too. BTW, comparing the old hippie Bill Walton with the Sex Pistols---wanna talk about complete opposite mindsets!

Yeah I knew I went a little far with the "genital wart" line. And you're right about the mindsets of Walton and the Pistols being as far apart as you can get. I've compared Walton to Syd Barrett because of the short tenure of greatness so I figured it would work with the Sex Pistols.

  • When Public Image Limited was in concert (DC 2010) Eddie, and Jeff wanted to met John Lydon "Rotten". They went backstage and was really influenced by PIL; so much so they started covering the song Public Image. Eddie and Jeff (along with two other guys) were really cool and nice to John. If you get to know John Lydon you will know most things he says is for show and entertainment. I have no doubt that John said those things for shock value; after all there is not a bigger singer in the world than EV.

Agree. And no one went crazy when Flea inducted Metallica. It's better when the induction comes from a passionate fan, and that's what Eddie is to Ramones, NY, REM and whomever else he inducted. I wouldn't give a fuck if Jessica Simpson inducted PJ, as long as he speech showed her passion for a band, she would be the right choice (example onlony, ofcourse, hahaha). Fuck, I hope she doesn't get the job!
PJ - Sydney 1998; Sydney 2003; Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle 2006; Melbourne, Sydney 2009; Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney 2014.
EV - Canberra, Newcastle, Sydney 2011; Sydney 2014.
